So here we begin at another summer break. Have any big trip plans? Never sure what to pack? Me neither. But I always manage to forget one thing every time I travel, depending on how tired I am while pack. These are a few things you can check off you list if you are worried before heading off into the world this summer.
1. Chargers
Do you live in the 21st century? Congratulations, you need a charger. Like right now. Go put it in your bag. I can wait. No matter if you have a phone to bring, a laptop, or even a FitBit, chances are you are going to need a charger. Going camping? Bring a solar panel charger or some batteries for emergencies.
2. Hairbrush
Hairless friends, keep scrolling. Hair-having friends, take careful note. For some reason, this is the one thing I always manage to forget. And with one and half feet of hair, that is a big problem for me. No matter the size of brush or comb you need, make sure to have on on hand. Having your hair out of your way will literally allow you to see more of your trip than you could have hoped.
3. Stomach Medicine
Whether it is the next city over or a new country, you will be experiencing different food than you are used to. A lot of it will taste amazing, but not always does your stomach agree. When you have to share a bathroom with multiple people, having some stomach medicine on hand is a must. In addition, a general first aid kit isn't a bad idea either.
4. Zip Ties
No, you will not be using these to tie up an enemy. In fact, try not to bring zip ties on a airplane, you will make the American TSA nervous, which is never a good thing. These bad boys are super useful when things break on a trip. Broken zipper? Tie down everything with one of these until you can fix it. Like the zipping sound ties makes when you close them? Use these as "destressers." You will usually find a smart way to use them before you head back home.
5. Camera
Whether you have your smartphone camera or a $2000 Nikon camera, taking pictures on your trip may be a priority for you. Being able to describe your trip to others can be greatly helped through the storytelling of photography. Just make sure to always have a lot of memory before you go. I hope you realize that not every moment needs to snapped, some need to be only experienced.
6. Nail Repair Kit
Listen, friends. I know I have not really given you specific brands of what essentials you need yet, but trust me when I say that the above brand is the best. Tweezerman does not mess around when it comes to quality brand beauty and maintenance tools, and this is no exception. The size is small and perfect, the tools are strong as the brand has always made them, and it comes in a nice package for travel. About 3/4 the size of your hand, this Mini Nail Rescue Kit fits in any purse or pocket and will save you a lot of trouble with any splinter or broken nail.
7. Pen/Pencil and Journal
Old fashioned? Yes. Essential? Double yes. Many times in our lives, especially on trips, we will not have the opportunity to use our technology, but there are thoughts and ideas and revelations that may occur when you least expect them. Writing something down can keep a memory fresh and vibrant, and drawing pictures can bring back the happiest and awe-inspiring moments.
8. Ziploc Bags
No matter where you go, Ziploced bags will be your saving grace. Storing your bottles and liquids will be less stressful when you know that they were exploding proof in your suitcase. Dirty clothes you have to separate in your bag? Why not use a Ziploc bag? Super cheap, highly durable, and easily replaceable, make sure to being at least five of these on every trip you go on. You will thank me later.
9. Wisps
Let me show you the way of Wisp. These little buggers have saved my butt in countless adventures, especially in places where the water was questionable. No water needed, these brushes come with toothpaste in the middle (the little blue dot) of the head, and a pick at the bottom to catch any stragglers. They are easy to carry in any pack and disposable. While effective, I would add that you should also bring a small bottle of mouthwash just to get the extra clean feeling.
10. Deodorant
Do not be the person who does not bring deodorant. I will find you. And we will not have a pleasant discussion. Not only does this make you feel more confident wherever you go this summer (oh, yeah, supposed to be one of the hottest summers in record history this year), it makes me not die. There is nothing wrong with body odor, it naturally occurs and there should be no shame in having it. But for many, it gets to the point where people around you can involuntarily become ill to the scent, and being courteous to this point would be much appreciated. I really do not want to see a classmate of mine throw up because they have a sensitive nose (I wish I could say I am joking but I saw this happen).
11. Tide-2-Go (or Laundry Detergent)
This is your friend. You know that one nice shirt you brought that you just got hummus on? You know you do not have any detergent right? And finding a laundromat anywhere is going to be the biggest pain in the butt. Put on of these in your day pack and you will be ready to go. However, with longer trips, saving some detergent in a bag and washing your clothes in the sink isn't a bad idea, either.
12. Open Eyes
I don't want to sound like a hippie, but far too many of us are stuck in our devices. I am definitely one of those. But looking up, taking in your surroundings, and practicing all five of your senses in a new environment is more interesting than anything you will find in your alternate technological reality. Use all of these other essentials for your tools of traveling success. Happy adventuring!
