12 Struggles Every Stonehill Student Knows To Be True

College is a rollercoaster, and Stonehill's no exception.

Stonehill College

Disclaimer: I love my school very much. These are just a few things that I, along with fellow students, feel could use some comical recognition. So, without further adieu, here are 12 struggles that most of us face...

1.The walk from the Sem to literally anywhere.

This one goes without saying. Hearing “I live in the Sem” is usually a huge turn off for most people, given the extremely long walk to it from the rest of campus (besides the SpoCo, but how often do you really go to the gym?!).

2.The Pastabilities line.

Another classic Stonehill struggle. Yes, pastabilities is probably the best biweekly meal offered on campus, but is it actually worth the wait in that huge line?? (Yes, it is. Patience is a virtue.)

3.Finding a parking spot.

For a school with not that many students, we certainly have a lot of cars... and with a lot of cars comes not many open parking spots. Parking in Lot 17 sucks for anyone who doesn't live in the Heights. And to be honest, you have a better chance of winning the lottery than finding a spot in the Villa lot.

4.The mysterious smells of Boland.

Whether its weed, cheap perfume, middle-school scented axe cologne, or just general body odor, it’s always a toss up when you walk into Boland. It’s an old building with not a lot of ventilation, and a lot of sweaty athletes.

5.The number of emails we receive on the daily.

We receive more emails than we do assignments. Enough said.

6.Understanding the number order at the Hill.

They go from 21 to 95 to 00 all in one minute. Does anybody really understand this logic?

7.The dysfunctional printers.

It's Sunday night, and you just finished the paper that you procrastinated all weekend. Where are you heading to so you can print this piece of mastery? Oh wait, nowhere. Why is that? Because all of the printers on campus are either broken or strategically hidden. You’re better off just bringing your own, to be completely honest.

8.Tripping on the walkway in the quad because people feel the need to steal bricks.

We’ve all fallen victim to this one (literally). Although bricks make wonderful door stoppers, the missing bricks from the quad are a huge tripping hazard. Thanks, freshmen!

9. Running out of food flex and hill dollars in 2 days because of Dunks.

Everyone can relate to this one, especially those who have class in the science center every day. Dunks is conveniently tempting, and all of those coffees every single morning really add up.

10. Landscaping is the #1 priority at Stonehill.

It’s true when they say the grass is always greener on the Stonehill side. Unfortunately, this comes with a downside. They are ALWAYS MOWING THE LAWNS. Rain or shine, 8am or 8pm, winter or summer, you're bound to walk past someone who is working on the landscaping.

11.The inconveniently placed skating rink.

This one particularly relates to science majors, or people who live in O'Hara. Thanks to this rink, 2 minutes was just tacked on to your early morning walk.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
