12 Signs You Grew Up In Los Angeles

While living in San Diego for the better part of two years has certainly expanded my perspective of southern California, it will never be as good of a city as my home of Los Angeles. From its crazy drivers to its famous picture-worthy restaurants, nothing compares to the unique life of a Los Angeles citizen. Whether you moved away or you’re still stuck in the city, here are 12 signs you grew up in Los Angeles that everybody can relate to.

1. You have a soft spot for Dodger dogs.

No matter how generic the hot dog might actually be, the fact that it is sold in Dodger Stadium automatically makes it 10 times better.

2. You automatically support every Los Angeles sports team, regardless of whether you actually follow the sport or not.

Catch me decked out in LA Kings gear without having ever watched a single hockey game in my entire life.

3. You always get asked if you’ve met a famous celebrity.

You’ll inevitably start talking about that time you swore you saw someone famous in Starbucks once. It’s kind of hard to separate the real celebrities from the wannabe ones, anyway.

4. You avoiding driving at all costs whenever it rains.

Never mind the fact that rain is much needed, what with California being in a severe drought—it’s still a curse to our already bad reputation of being terrible drivers.

5. Seeing film crews and sets no longer phase you.

When one of your regularly-used streets is blocked off for yet another low-budget indie film set, you start to get more annoyed than awestruck.

6. You know that every decent street food truck will have a long line.

Let’s face it, if you don’t have at least three people ahead of you in line for the corn man, you’re probably wasting your time.

7. Earthquakes that are less than a 4.0 on the Richter scale are irrelevant.

Living on a fault line makes you accustomed to the occasional split-second jolt. More often than not, you’re left wondering if there was actually an earthquake or if you were just imagining it.

8. You automatically add at least 20 minutes to any destination time.

Does Google Maps tell you that it will only take you 30 minutes to get to Urth Caffé from your location? Sure, let’s see how that turns out once you’re stuck in rush hour traffic.

9. You know where to find all of the most Instagram-worthy spots in the city.

From the famous pink wall to the angel wings mural, you know all of the most popular places to snap pictures in downtown Los Angeles and if you’re a true native, you know that sometimes the best wall art can be found simply by exploring.

10. Wildfires are the norm.

It’s not really a Los Angeles summer until you wake up in the morning to possible evacuation warnings and a fine layer of ash covering your entire front lawn.

11. Saying you’re from "L.A." means nothing.

Telling fellow Los Angeles dwellers that you’re from here doesn’t mean anything to us. Are you from the Westside? Downtown? San Gabriel Valley? You need to be more specific.

12. You love your city.

As much as you like to complain about Los Angeles and all of the crazy people found in it, chances are you will probably never leave it behind. After all, nothing compares to the city, does it?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
