Imagine the noisy sounds of an emergency room. Gurneys being pulled in every direction with patients and doctors, surgeons and nurses running around. Now imagine the intensity of the operating room. There are surgeons standing around a body. They decide the patients fate with each cut they make.
These are a few of the many examples of things that happen in the show Grey's Anatomy, and let me tell you, this show tells it all. It tells of the good, bad and ugly of being a surgical intern and resident. To me, it seems like one of the most honest portrayals of the road to becoming a surgeon. But then again, it may just be an over-done, nice version of becoming a surgeon. Either way, this show has made me want to become one.
When I had first started watching this show, I was enrolled in a basic human anatomy class at my university. I love anatomy in the first place, but I found that when watching Grey's, I could connect things in the show to things I learned in class. And I absolutely loved it. I loved the fact that when they were taking about the hepatic duct during a surgery, I knew that they were talking about the liver. It was just all so fascinating to me. And sadly, I had used references from Grey's on some of my tests to help remember things.
The more I got into the show, the more cool I thought being a surgeon would be. Although the long days, nights and 24 hour shifts, I still thought it would be so fun.
I swore that after only 5 of the 12 seasons, I was certified to be a surgeon. I found myself saying phrases like "Push one of epi." or "CLEAR." And by that time, I knew the drill of going into surgery. Washing your hands was a must. Each surgeon had their quirks to the scrub cap they wore, how they set up their equipment, and how they dealt with the stress duringsurgery. I often found myself wondering how I would do these things.
A quick word of advice to anyone planning on watching Grey's Anatomy:
Watch it because it is an AMAZING show, but expect to want your life to be just like Meredith Grey's and Christina Yang's.
End of story.
