11 Things You Can Relate To If You Have Ever Worked At An Ice Cream Store
Kathleen Mitchell

1. People feel they can tell you anything and everything.

People who work at ice cream places are basically the hairdressers of the food industry. People just want to tell us their problems.

2. Customers yell at you for things out of your control.

"I'm sorry, we are out of that flavor," is probably the worst thing you can say to someone trying to buy ice cream.

3. You have tried every ice cream flavor you serve.

Let's face it. You have tried them all more than once, even the ones you know you are not going to like.

4. You go home covered in ice cream.

Your work clothes have stains literally all over them and your body is caked in chocolate because, for some reason, any flavor that has a chocolate base will end up on your person somewhere, especially the forearms.

5. That feeling when a large group comes in...

...Especially when it is two minutes until closing and an entire softball team or dance recital comes in and they all want milkshakes and large sundaes.

6. People trying (what feels like) every flavor until they settle for something simple like vanilla or chocolate.

If you have to try every flavor to decide you want vanilla or chocolate, why waste our time and yours?

7. The struggle of making a milkshake.

You swear on your paycheck that the thing is possessed and it hates you and anyone who touches it, except your manager/boss. People also think they are doing us a favor when they order "just a vanilla milkshake."

8. You recognize certain customers and know their orders by heart.

That cute old man that always gets the small strawberry in a cup or that couple that gets the banana split and shares it. You remember the orders of all your favorite customers...or your least favorite.

9. You hear things like "I would be a thousand pounds if I worked here."

You just laugh and say you eat the ice cream every once in a while, even though you eat it every chance you get.

10. You know what is in every flavor that has ever come into the store.

You know all the basics to that random flavor you had for like two weeks and then never made a return.

11. No one believes how hard it can be working in an ice cream store.

Sure, it is easy at some points, but when you have to make a large of that ice cream flavor that no one gets so it's frozen solid, and you have to basically chisel ice cream into a cup while the customer just stares you down as you continue to break the cone because you cannot get it to stay in the cone, you will know it is not as easy as it looks.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
