11 Things To Miss About College Life Over Break

I am truly looking forward to settling in at home and spending time with friends and family for an extended period of time this coming break. However, certain aspects of college life are easy to get used to and hard to let go off, even temporarily. The convenience of being in close proximity to food, friends, and free time is the ultimate reward for every test, paper, and hangover we have to endure. Here are 11 things I am going to miss at college whilst at home for break.

1. Judgement free late-night eating.

Sure, I have a stocked kitchen at home, but eating at an obscene hour of the night is not really the norm outside of college. Plus there is no one to join in on the midnight picnic, so the whole scene is pretty sad.

2. Having a 24/7 buddy.

Sometimes my roommate is the only reason I get out of bed. We force each other to do random things all the time. Even on occasions when my roommate is unavailable to hang out, other friends are just a short distance away.

3. Spontaneous naps.

Naps are encouraged at school. I have seen people fall asleep in virtually every building on my campus and I, nor any other student, see anything wrong with that. I can take naps at home, but they are harder to justify.

4. Not having to be quiet after returning from a night out.

Tip-toeing into the house is the worst game to play at home, and it just so happens that I am terrible at it. The more quiet I try to be, the more likely I am to wake up the entire house by tripping over my own two feet.

5. Brunch.

I know I can make myself breakfast, but brunch is so much more than that. It is something to look forward to all week and something that all of your friends make a collective effort to be at. The waffles are an added bonus.

6. The zero transportation required to hang out with friends.

I do not have to overly exert myself to go chat with one of my friends. No driving is necessary to borrow a book or shirt, and studying or watching movies until late into the night is easier when you are only feet away from your bed.

7. Using "the Wi-Fi was down" as an excuse for everything.

Not responding to a text, missed a mandatory meeting, forgot to submit a paper...Oops, sorry the Wi-Fi at school was down again! Having terrible Internet connection does have its perks. Unfortunately, this excuse loses steam off campus.

8. Being productive while looking like a bum.

No, I probably do not look my best right now and yes, these are the same sweatpants from yesterday, but the majority of my homework is finished and I never ceased to be comfortable. At home it is frowned upon to look like I just rolled out of bed on a regularly basis, but it is a hard habit to kick from school.

9. Counting "running late" as cardio for the day.

I am pretty good about going to the gym, but there are those times when I simply do not have a moment to spare or I really just do not feel like exerting an unnecessary amount of energy. At home, I do not exactly have a lot of excuses not to workout.

10. Always having something to do.

Skipping past the homework and projects that have to be done, there is always something to do either through the school or with your friends. There is literally free entertainment everywhere, or, at least, accessible entertainment everywhere. Occupying myself at home can be exhausting, especially if my friends from high school are not home for their breaks yet.

11. Being able to come and go whenever.

At home, it's a thing to have to explain where I am going, as well as answer a million other questions, to my mom. I am used to just walking out the door whenever I fancy, but on break I know it's courtesy to give the house a heads up about my whereabouts, especially because I know I am going to wake them up upon my return home from my lack of stealth.

The lack of homework and stress will be a blessing this coming break, but I really will miss these things about college life. Once I get into my routine at home though, I will have an entirely new list of things to miss about being home once I have returned to school.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
