Let’s face it guys, 2017 wasn’t the best year for many of us. There have been so many crazy things going on in the world that it would take all of 2018 to outline them all. However, even though 2017 was a regulation awful year, there are still many things to be thankful for.

Here is a list of just a few things that I’m grateful for, even though 2017 was awful.

1. Thanksgiving Break

I don’t know about you, but a 5-day weekend is my idea of paradise.

2. Christmas Break

Don’t act like this month isn’t your favorite month of the year. No class and the possibility of snow.

3. The end of the semester

You’ve worked your tail off for 9 weeks and now it’s time to relax! Thank goodness for Netflix and Hot Chocolate to help you get over the stress of finals

4. Family

After a long semester surrounded by my fellow students, I am always so happy to be back home with my family relaxing. There’s no place like home!

5. Friends

Yes, 2017 may have been a pain, but we wouldn’t have made it through without each other! You can’t deny that even bad times are fun when you are surrounded by people making you laugh

6. Pets

Specifically, for me, this is my pup. Nothing warms one’s heart quite like a floppy-eared BFF that’s always waaay too excited to see you.

7. Peppermint Mochas

Starbucks’s best drink. Hands down. Don’t @ me.

8-13. Starbucks Other Holiday Drinks

Toasted White Chocolate Mocha, Chestnut Praline Chai Tea Latte, Caramel Brulée Latte, Chestnut Praline Latte, Eggnog Latte, Gingerbread Latte... Yeah.

14. An End to Dorm Life

While roommates are fun, it’s always nice to be back home with a real kitchen and being able to eat food that isn’t cooked in a microwave is always a plus.

15. Laundry

Honestly, there’s just something about your laundry when it’s washed at home vs when you wash it in the dorm washers. It always smells better and it always feels softer.

16. FOOD!

We all know the best part about the end of the year is the unadulterated amounts of delicious food we all get to eat. Honestly, I think we all just make ourselves hungry all year so we can really enjoy holidays like Thanksgiving.

17. It’s Almost Over

The thing we are most grateful for in 2017 is that it’s almost over! Here’s hoping that 2018 brings us all happiness and good fortune!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
