Being that I have been an art major since I began college, I understand the stigma that comes with it. Sometimes I would rather just opt to say that I am undecided in my studies because it would be easier than the questions I get following people finding out my major is in fact art. I have gathered a few of my favorite questions I have gotten over the years to help educate you on things you most certainly should not say to an art major!

1. Your classes must be so easy!

Please, just never say this. Trust me. You are not ready for the response that will occur informing you just how difficult our classes are! Just shhhh.

2. Do you even do any school work?

Of course not, I'm not in college for any reason. In fact all we do is sit in a circle and talk about colors in the Art Department.

3. So like what do you plan on doing with an art degree?

Just avoid asking this question all together. Chances are we don't have all the answers and that's okay. It's not as simple as majoring in nursing to be a Nurse. Art has so many opportunities that it is hard to have a definitive answer.

4. Art? That sounds more like a hobby to me.

Well it is a hobby for me as well, considering I chose it as my major! I assure you though, I am not spending all my time bettering myself just for a "hobby".

5. Oh it's finals week? You must not be stressed at all!

People assume that Art majors aren't overly stressed during exam time. Trust me final projects cause a lot more stress, lack of sleep, and need for caffeine than typical exams. Say this to an art major and expect us to walk away.

6. Why are you even in school? You don't have to study to be an artist!

I understand I don't have to go to school to be an artist, but I am going to school to better my craft. I am going to learn about art and everything that comprises it. Everything I learn is valuable and will help me in my professional career.

7. Oh I love learning about Michelangelo, I get why you rather art history.

Oh you know about Michelangelo, well then you must be an art historian. Knowing about one painter that lived hundreds of years ago doesn't qualify you as "knowing" art. I spend hours in a classroom to have learned the history of art from the most primitive cave paintings to to the most recent contemporary pieces.

8. Art was my favorite subject in High School.

And mine was English... your point?

9. Art? Really? Does your mom know you chose that major? Mine would never let me do that.

Yes, my mother knows my major. Yes, she supports what I have chosen.

10. Omg you're an art major? Draw me right now!

There would probably be no response from this, just a simple eye roll.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
