If your major is Apparel Design, you probably have a love/hate relationship with your major. Yes, our major is glamorous from the outside, but from the inside, it's a lot of sweat and tears. We spend hours on hours sewing, cutting, and designing garments that are only shown for 3 minutes on a runway, but at the end of the day, we are still proud. Most people don't understand the struggles of being an Apparel Design major, so here's a list of everything we have to deal with.
1. When people say you have an easy major.
Yes, you are right, spending 20+ hours a week in a sewing lab, sewing something that will probably be criticized to the point of wanting to rip it apart is so easy.
2. When people say you don't have a "real" major.
Ok.
3. Pulling all-nighters in a sewing lab is normal.
Which makes you grow very angry towards your professors.
4. "So do you want to be, like, a seamstress?" - Everyone
Yes, I'm spending four years in undergrad, and then I'll go to grad school just so I can be a seamstress and earn minimum wage...idiot.
5. When every girl you know asks to be your model for showcase.
6. Being competitive is taken to a whole different level.
Please relax, this isn't Project Runway.
7. Critique day is the worst day ever.
I've personally perfected the soft smile and saying "thank you" when a professor says my project wasn't good, but "a good idea" in front of the whole class. I get it, you hate it.
8. Everyone knows every detail of your life.
After spending 30 hours a week with your classmates in a tiny room, you really get to know each other. Together you have danced, vented about boys, thought about having a wine night while sewing, and ordered 20 pizzas at 4 in the morning.
9. Crying is totally ok.
Seeing people cry over a garment makes me want to cry because I've been there...so many times.
10. Classes are 500 hours long.
Even if you are one hour late to class, like me, you probably have only missed 1/10th of the class.
11. When professors ask you to make something out of your comfort zone.
Are you still going to give me an A when it goes horribly wrong?
12. When everyone asks you if you can make them a dress.
I really, really, really, really don't want to.
