11 Signs You Went To School In The South

If you didn't hear Wagon Wheel at a party, was it even worth attending?

Maybe you grew up in the South and stayed close to home for college, or maybe you're from Maine and wanted to flee the eternal winter from back home so you headed for the sunshine (and humidity). Either way, there are plenty of reasons why you could have ended up here, but no matter what, you know these things to be true about your college experience.

1. AC is necessary for most of both semesters.

Poor Freshman in non-air conditioned dorms bless their hearts. Three fans should do the trick.

2. Wagon Wheel is an anthem.

This song will play everywhere you go, and you will learn the words very quickly.

3. Country Roads is also an anthem.

If it's not Wagon Wheel, it's Country Roads. The song plays at bars, in the student center, at parties, at games, in the local Walmart-it's everywhere.

4. The college likely made the town what it is.

Without your university being built in the middle of nowhere town it was, there would likely be nothing around but fields and cows.

5. Rivers and Lakes are where the fun happens.

Floatin' the river and hangin' out lakeside are the best things to be doing on a warm weekend, and everyone is.

6. Local businesses thrive.

Southerners just have that hometown pride that resonates through colleges, the students become the best customers to all of the small town movie theaters and mom n' pop diners.

7. Every restaurant and dining hall has sweet tea.

They would be embarrassed if not, and don't even try ordering unsweet tea (@ the northerners), you'll get laughed at.

8. Snow days actually happen, but for no good reason.

The snow the South gets makes northerners cry from laughing, but down here we get snow days–who's laughing now?

9. Everyone has 'the' accent.

From school employees to the lady that cuts your hair, the accent is obvious. Y'all know what I mean.

10. Southern hospitality is a real thing.

Whether you're lost on campus, need a jump, or recommendations for where to take your parents when they come to town, there will always be someone around to offer advice or lend a hand.

11. Southern schools are southern proud.

Sure school pride is everywhere, but in the south it's different. There's a real sense of community from the students, staff, and locals, who come together to create some of the best schools (and best graduates) this country has to offer.

God Bless the South and God Bless the USA.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
