I think most millennials can vouch that their parents are a little behind on the current technology. Going away to college, you have to rely far more on technology to talk with your parents than you used to, and in my experience, communication becomes endearingly challenging. Here are 11 relatable mom-texts to remind you why you love your mother.
1. Her emoji interpretation is far different than yours.
She doesn’t quite understand the levels of excitement associated with the smiley emojis. Clearly, having a good day is hysterical. Oh, mom, could you be any more adorable?
2. When you don’t respond promptly, she becomes concerned that you’ve been struck by lightning or hit by a car while jaywalking to class.
You haven’t responded in over five minutes. When you’re home on vacation, you’re always on your phone. Something clearly must have happened, but what could it be? Her concern is so endearing you can’t even handle it (especially when she turns to drastic measures – the missed call and voicemail).
3. When she has the most exciting news, she has to provide you with all of the information. All of it. Immediately.
How could you possibly be busy when she’s this excited? You want to hear all the things, obviously. Oh, you’re in a meeting? Sorry you had to endure seven awkward phone alerts in the past two minutes.
4. And when she finds out some thrilling information about you (and the tattoo you might have gotten on a whim), she’s determined to get answers. Or photos. Or both.
Maybe she heard through the family grapevine, maybe you gave her a slip of information. But she wants more, clearly. Oh, it hasn’t been two minutes yet?
5. When mail is addressed to you, she feels compelled to open it.
The mystery of what your mail could be is far more interesting than the mail she receives on a daily basis. Yes, she knows what bills she’s about to get in the mail. But you don’t have bills just yet, so your mail is far more exciting than the predictable mail she receives. She treats your mail like it has an expiration date, and who knows when you’ll be home next?
6. She still relies on you as her fashion sense, and sends you photos of potential buys. As told by Regina George’s mom, “You girls keep me young.”
Unfortunately, you both can’t go shopping together. Like any BFF relationship, when you’re torn on purchasing something, you send a snapchat or a photo to your besties with an “SOS, yay or nay?” text as you continue to wander through the store while waiting for their answer. Your mom knows you’re more up to date with current styles and values your opinion, regardless of how far apart you are.
7. She can always provide a little comic relief.
Sometimes she’ll send you a million texts of irrelevant information, and sometimes she’ll simply send one that will leave you cracking up. And sometimes she’ll lose grandma in the store.
8. You have a difficult time following her thought process when she’s restricted by 160 characters.
It’s not uncommon to receive incredibly unrelated consecutive texts. Please enlighten me as to how an interview, a southern accent, and thawing chili have anything in common? Only mom-texts can leave you wondering what conversation you’re having.
9. She improvises when she can’t figure out her technological struggles.
Are there words to describe this screenshot? Because clearly, mom found a way to describe her emojis. The sad part? You know exactly what emoji she’s talking about.
10. She still hasn’t quite learned the texting keyboard, but she’s confident you know exactly what she’s saying…because you do (usually).
Yes, we learned in elementary school that “q” is usually followed by “u,” but in this context I don’t believe the full word is quacamole (mom, you’re adorable). A mother’s determination to extract information from her child is as intense as a police interrogation.
11. Regardless of whether you had time to talk, at the end of the day, she’s thinking of you and sending her love.
Let’s face it–college is crazy and busy and overwhelming. You don’t get the chance to talk about your day over dinner with your parents. Even so, you’re what your parents think about before they go to bed. They worry about you and want to check in to see how you’re doing, even if you only have time for a goodnight text.
