If you’re like me, then you can’t wait for this time of year! Every season is wonderful in its own way, but autumn has a uniqueness all its own. What makes autumn the best? I’m so glad you asked!
1. Beautiful colors
Autumn has the best colors of any season; it’s just a fact. Trees are aflame with scarlet, gold, receding green, and brown. The autumn sky is clearer and more piercingly blue than any other. Can any other color scheme rival autumn?
2. Leaves
Leaves are for tossing, jumping in, skipping through, or otherwise enjoying.
3. Foggy mornings
How can you not love foggy mornings?! You step out of your door… into a magical land. Hills, trees, and houses melt into a magical shroud. Everything feels quiet, calm, and pristine. And if there’s low visibility on your morning commute… who cares when everything is so beautiful?
4. Pumpkin pie
It’s perfect for fall, it’s orange, it smells wonderful, and brings back memories of gathering with family and friends. Pumpkin is just perfect for fall. (Really, any root vegetables are perfect!) On that note…
5. Pumpkin anything!
Hey, if you don’t like pumpkin pie, try a pumpkin spice latte! Or pumpkin muffins… or pumpkin soup…
6. Scarves, hats, boots, sweaters…
For those of us who go scarf-crazy, autumn is a happy time. We finally have an excuse to wear a different scarf every day! And when you add cozy sweaters, hats, and cute boots to the glorious-ness of scarves, what could be better?
7. Scarecrows and harvest décor
I love the inviting look of colorful squash, a haystack, and a scarecrow smiling lopsidedly by the front porch. The opportunities for decorations are endlessly unique.
8. New feathered friends
Bird enthusiasts love changing seasons, and autumn is no exception. I get so excited when I see my first “winter bird.” Whether it’s a white-throated sparrow or a junco, I am always thrilled to welcome back my little friends.
9. Crisp mornings and evenings
What could be better than crisp morning air? Something about the cool morning air always gives me a delightful sense of expectation.
10. Thanksgiving
This might be my favorite holiday. Family, good home-cooked food, traditions, and gratefulness make for a wonderful celebration. It’s not meant to be a big fiasco; it’s a simple time to gather and remember our blessings. Fall always makes me think of Thanksgiving.
11. Christmas is Right Around the Corner!
If Thanksgiving has a rival for a favorite holiday, it’s Christmas! I think the anticipation for Christmas is part of what gives autumn its unique excitement.
Finally, I can hear Christmas carols all around me and sing them as much as I please. Wreaths and candles appear in windows, and greenery decorates all the houses. Christmas concerts might be my favorite kind to attend. Gingerbread and family Christmas cookie recipes smell delicious. I love seeing each family's favorite treats! Happy anticipation for gifts fills little ones or children at heart. And of course, Christmas is a time to treasure and worship my Jesus. There’s nothing quite like a candlelight Christmas Eve service when everyone is singing Silent Night a cappella. It makes me realize afresh my God’s greatness and humility in giving His life for us.
