With the college year under way, many students are feeling money and time crunch especially during the height of midterm season. With so much to do and so little time, we might find ourselves figuring out if we want to use a meal swipe let alone run over to the dining hall especially with first-year students. I came up with a short, affordable list of items that all college students should have including freshmen. Plus, it is my duty as a major foodie to provide a decent list of food items for your mini fridge.
1. Tupperware Containers
Trust me. You will have more of these than you want. They will be everywhere for the end of the semester. They are perfect for leftovers or carrying lunch/snacks to class.
2. Eggs
Yes, there are microwavable egg recipes. Not too appetizing, but you can also make cakes and other sweet treats using eggs too!
3. Milk
You will need milk for everything basically. Cereal, oatmeal, scrambled eggs (they're fluffier that way), baked goods, or even chocolate milk. Some milks are even designed for lactose intolerant people who just want a class of milk. You can use milk as an alternative coffee creamer if you run out (I've been there).
4. Bread
Grilled cheese, sandwiches, toast. You name it, bread is probably somewhere in the college diet. You can do a lot with bread and there are even gluten-free options as well if you are unable to eat gluten or choose to have a gluten-free lifestyle. Tortillas count too!
5. Bagels & Cream Cheese
These are quick to make if you're in a hurry, or if you take ten years to get out of bed like me, and they are quite tasty. Just plop one in the microwave for 30 seconds and they are warmed up and ready to have the cream cheese on them. They also make a good late night study snack.
6. Bagel Bites
Say no more. Bagel/pizza bites are a god-send especially at 2 in the morning after a late Netflix marathon, coming back from going out, or just in general for a snack. You'll thank me for this advice on your weekends.
7. Frozen Veggies
Fresh vegetables have a short shelf life so you want to make sure you can get those things frozen. It's a cheaper alternative, microwave-safe, and you can mix them in with rice or noodles. Speaking of which...
8. Ramen Noodles/Rice
I almost question if you're a college student or young adult if there is not a single pack of ramen noodles laying around somewhere. Anyway, you can use said frozen veggies, or some from the food court even if you have swipes, with your noodles. You also don't have to use the seasoning if you don't want to and it is still pretty tasty stuff.
9. Cereal
It's not hard to make a bowl of cereal which makes it great. There are healthy and gluten-free cereals which can make a rough start to the day a little easier. You can go as sugary as Lucky Charms to as healthy as say Special K. Cereal plus milk equals breakfast. Easy as that!
10. Popcorn
Perfect for those nights with friends or just at night in general. It's a light snack just pretty salty. You will not be salty about having a bunch of bags of popcorn. Just please, for the sake of everyone, do not burn your popcorn and then take it out right after. You'll wake up everyone in the building probably and at 3 a.m. it will not be fun especially in the winter.
11. Coffee/Hot Beverages
I think the gif says it all. Whether you enjoy coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or some combination of the three, hot beverages will be there for you in the morning while you're struggling to make it to your 8 a.m. or there for you if your partner breaks up with you at 2 a.m. Sheldon Cooper endorses hot drinks to help with problems so that says everything.
We all know college is hard and takes a lot of time out of our lives, but we must push through and make the most out of it. Just make sure you have some food on hand because who knows how you will feel that day or if the weather will be awful or if you just don't want to leave your room/apartment/suite.
