Rumor has it, most Chinese proverbs can be attributed to Confucius. He is known to have spurred out wise thoughts and phrases from time to time. You'll recognize most proverbs from the fortune cookies that come with your Chinese food, however, these 11 proverbs will certainly give you something to think about.

1. It is better to travel 10,000 miles than to read 10,000 books.

It's all about getting out there and experiencing life for yourself. Yes, reading is always great, but sometimes you have to put the book (or computer) down and go outside.

2. Time is money, and it is difficult for one to use money to get time.

Basically, you must use your time wisely, because you can never get it back.

3. When rich, think of poverty, but don't think of riches when you are poor.

You must work hard to make your way to the top, but once you're there, don't forget where you came from.

4. Behind an able man there are always other able men.

From teachers to your parents, there are so many people who make you who you are.

5. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.

Seize the day, take advantage of your time, no matter what.

6. The best memory is not so firm as faded ink.

Write things down because you will forget them.

7. If all contribute their firewood they may build up a strong fire.

It takes many people to create something great, which is why you cannot take your family or friends for granted.

8. Dig a well before you are thirsty.

Make sure to plan ahead so that you can be prepared for anything that may come your way.

9. Don't build a new ship out of old wood.

When you get stuck, the best way to move forward is by starting with a fresh perspective.

10. Do not let yesterday use too much of today.

What happened yesterday stays there. It's a new day, which means that you can start the day with a clean slate.

11. Only those that have traveled the road know where the holes are deep.

When pursuing your passion, you are going to run into obstacles, but that only makes you more experienced.

When I was learning how to talk, I was taught both Portuguese and English at the same time. In elementary school, I started taking mandatory Spanish classes, which I did well in because of my knowledge of Portuguese. Then in high school, on top of taking Spanish, I also started taking French. Now, in college, already fluent in English and Portuguese, I'm in the process of becoming fluent in Spanish, and I have a standard high school level understanding of French.
