101 Life Lessons from the One-Season Wonder That is "Freaks and Geeks"

While bored over Christmas Break, I decided to re-watch one of my favorite t.v. series: “Freaks and Geeks”. While only consisting of one season and eighteen forty-five minute episodes, “Freaks and Geeks” is a brilliant piece of cinematic gold like no other. It’s awesome, frankly, and it’s got a lot of huge well-loved stars like James Franco, Seth Rogan, Jason Segal, Busy Philips, Linda Cardellini, James Francis Daily, Sam Levine, and Martin Starr, just to name the leads. The show focuses on siblings Sam and Lindsay Weir, who both attend McKinley high school and navigate the teenage tribulations that come with growing up. Lindsay sets out to shed her goody-two-shoes image by ditching the “mathletes” and hanging out with freaks, while nerdy Sam pines for the heart of popular cheerleader Cindy Sanders. The show has great writing and super quotable lines, but at the center of it all is funny and heartfelt. It’s a real tragedy the show only had one season, but the lessons in it are universal. Here’s some life lessons I took from the series while re-watching it again.

  1. A T-shirt with a bloody axe on it is seldom considered appropriate church attire.
  2. You’re older siblings are the only people who are allowed to bully you.
  3. High school sucks.
  4. You shouldn’t care about your reputation. (People will judge you anyways, so what’s the point?)
  5. School yearbook pictures always look atrocious.
  6. Bullies are so immature.
  7. Everyone’s just trying to find their place.
  8. Some people are gonna hate you no matter what you do.
  9. You can’t take back the words you say.
  10. We are all Sam Weir when he sees Cindy when we see our crush.
  11. Find your own big, gigantic drum kit.
  12. “There are a lot of ways to die in a fight.”
  13. Dance with your crush BEFORE the song isn’t slow anymore.
  14. Friends grow apart. It’s painful, but it happens.
  15. Hell hath no fury like scorned teenage lovers.
  16. Don’t drink and drive.
  17. Don’t be the rebound for people’s emotional baggage,
  18. There is no such thing as a “small get together”.
  19. Non-alcoholic beer is beer without “that ingredient that makes you drunk”.
  20. Putting a jacket on top of it will totally disguise the fact that you’re lugging around a keg of beer.
  21. Opening a bag of chips for your crush is the ultimate act of chivalry.
  22. Remove all glass/breakable objects before throwing a party.
  23. The placebo effect can backfire. Badly.
  24. No matter how much you try and reinvent yourself, parts of your past will always follow you.
  25. When your song comes on, you gotta JAM.
  26. Heartbreak stings like no other pain.
  27. Sometimes people you trust will disappoint you.
  28. Sometimes people you don’t even know that well will be there for you when your friends won’t.
  29. You will be your Mom’s “baby” no matter what age you are.
  30. Picking the perfect Halloween costume is a daunting task.
  31. Don’t take unwrapped candy while trick-or-treating on Halloween.
  32. True friends will stick by you no matter how you much you bite off more than you can chew.
  33. You never know what people have going on at home.
  34. Everybody thinks their parents are mental… but some people's parents actually are.
  35. Fruit roll ups get you through anything.
  36. We all deserve to see a happy ending.
  37. No one likes sex education.
  38. Or algebra.
  39. But that doesn’t mean you should cheat out on either.
  40. It’s great to have a dream.
  41. When covering a song, it should somewhat resemble the song.
  42. Naming a band is one of the hardest parts of forming one.
  43. Don’t take support from your parents for granted, not everyone has it.
  44. Sometimes you need to scream into a pillow.
  45. Some people just don’t care about anything, or only care about themselves.
  46. Your best friends will always be brutally honest with you,
  47. Karma will always have your back.
  48. Picking a lab partner can make you or break you.
  49. “Are people nice here?” “Sometimes.” ACCURATE.
  50. No one’s into labels but PSA: Define. The. Relationship.
  51. If you’re going to get a fake ID, get one from a reputable person.
  52. People love to stick their nose in your business.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
