For some reason, the value of being a genuinely kind person has diminished in this day and age. In fact, being blunt, rude or flat out mean is often seen as humorous or a sign of power. It's hard to say when this trend of knowingly and intentionally making others feel bad or insignificant began, but it's a trend we should end. We should not bash other people for being different than us or having opposing beliefs. Instead of looking down on people who may have gone through rough patches, made mistakes or been put in less than ideal situations out of their control, we should lend a helping hand and keep an open mind. Before judging people for who they are or where they are at in their life, we should consider what obstacles and roadblocks they may have faced. As the well-known quote states, "don't judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes."
Be compassionate, understanding, and respectful.
Here are a few commonsense tips to become a better person:
1. If you don't know, don't assume.
Just because someone may not be wearing the most fashionable clothes or they drive a car with a rusted out bottom and loud motor does not make them any less of a person.
2. Keep an open mind.
You don't have to agree with everyone's choices or beliefs; however, that is not an invitation to make fun of someone for feeling different about something. Whether it's religion, sexuality or political views, everyone is entitled to have their own opinion.
3. Volunteer your time.
Help others in need, give back to your community, and never take for granted the blessings in your life.
4. Complain less.
While it is true that everyone has their own struggles and problems, consider your daily complaints in comparison to a third-world country. Should you really be complaining about not having the newest iPhone when some people don't even have clean water to drink? Is not having a new outfit to wear out really "the end of the world?"
5. Smile more.
Something so simple can be so impactful.
6. Be kind.
This should be self-explanatory. Does being mean or rude to someone get you any further in life? Give a compliment, hold the door for someone, lend a dollar to the person who ran out of cash. The possibilities are endless.
7. Mind your manners.
A simple please and thank you are rare utterances in this day and age, but can mean so much to others when used frequently and appropriately.
8. Be sincere and respectful.
Don't stereotype others based on their skin color, religious beliefs or values.
9. Pay it forward.
Whether it's a small, caring act or a life-changing gift, find little ways to give back everyday and everywhere.
10. See the good in everyone.
Although tough times tend to bring out the worst in people, try to look past the bad and embrace the good. Forgive those who have wronged you. Pray for your enemies.
This list is not all-inclusive and not something that can be completed in a day. Instead, becoming a better person takes commitment and hard work. It is something that can be accomplished over time by remembering to respect, love, and have empathy toward others.
