To me , the first week of college as a Freshman might is quite a nerve wracking week .I'll never forget my first week of college . I felt like I got lost on campus all the time , I didn't really know anybody , and plus just walking into your first college class can be an intimidating experience . Here's an itemized list of what I wish I had done my first week of college, to hopefully keep you from making the same mistakes !
1. Don’t be afraid to go up and introduce yourself to your professors!
Syllabus week is probably one of the best times to get to know your professors, as their office hours will be the least crowded. So take this time to really introduce yourself. Tell them about yourself, what your plans are and what you're interested in! And while you're at it, why not ask them what their dissertation work was in (they dig that, I promise). I cannot tell you how amazing it is when a professor knows your name and face. It will make surviving that class so much easier
2. Find a Study Group
If you have a class that you're really nervous about, don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to a few of your classmates and ask if they want to form a study group together! Finding people to study with can be beneficial because you can quiz each other, compare notes, and distress with some coffee as well!
3. Read and reread the syllabus multiple times
Hey. Professors really hate it when you email them questions during the first week that have the answer in the syllabus. Plus, reading the syllabus multiple times will give you a good grasp as to what classes will be the most time-consuming. Is it a class that I will spend no more than an hour with every week, or will it be a class that might take a good amount of all-nighters?
4. Buy books early
There is nothing worse than trying to order books a few days before classes start. Because of this, I recommend ordering books at least a few weeks ahead of time. Also, sites like Amazon and Chegg have amazing textbook deals.
5. Don’t be afraid to call and talk to family and friends back home!
I think homesickness is important. Getting out of a familiar place can really help you grow as a person. But I understand. you miss your family, and your family misses you, so go ahead and spend some time on the phone with your loved ones back home before classes go into full steam.
6. Make your RA your BFF
Look, RAs are low key the best. They will have the answers to about any questions about dorm life, or school in general, and if they don’t they will point you to someone who does! And if you're stressed, RAs are typically very good listeners, so you can vent to them as well!
7. Explore campus as much as possible
I will willingly admit that I spent my first week wondering around because despite the campus tour I went on during the spring, I had no clue where a lot of things were. So during some spare time your first week, I really recommend just walking around and exploring campus with some new friends to really figure out where everything is.
8. Look for things to get involved in!
Campus involvement is crucial for grad school and medical school applications. They're a great way to make new friends, and there are usually so many organizations on campus that it will be almost impossible to find one you don’t like, and if you can't, you can make one of your own! Use the first week to research campus organizations to get involved.
9. Partake in some social event your first week!
Most likely, during the first week of classes, your school will have some events planned for the first week of classes. Don’t be afraid to use this time to really make friends, because these first-week social events were where I made my closest friends. Its also a great way to destress and get settled into your college!
10. Most importantly: don’t stress
You’ve made it this far. You're at the college you want to be at (at least I hope ), and endless adventures await you! take up all the opportunities you can, and don’t hold back ! You will hit some highs, and you'll hit the inevitable lows, but I guarantee in college there will always be someone somewhere to help you out of the lows. You've got this!
All in all, your first ever week of college doesn't have to be scary or intimidating if you just take the time to be social and de-stress. An amazing four years awaits you, so take advantage of every second of it!
