A mess of neon and synthesized music, full of some of the best and worst time; a decade we all hold near and dear to our hearts: the 80’s. It was a time where some of the most iconic trends came into play, and interestingly enough, some of these trends are already making their way back into the limelight. So break out the boombox and turn on some Madonna, the 80’s are here!

1. Funky Hair

While not everyone’s walking around with a perm and ten pounds of hairspray, experimental hairstyles are making their rounds once again. Women are shaving sections to the entirety of their hair off, sporting pixie cuts and tortoise shell highlights, and playing with their bangs' length. While these styles might not be exact replicas of some of our 80’s favorites, it is curiosity and exploration that led to the rat tail in the first place.

2. Fanny Packs

Yes, believe it or not, the most quirky, “un-stylish," made-fun-of accessory is back and better than ever! Designers such as Alexander Wang and Karl Lagerfeld have sent their bum bags down the runway. What a time to be alive–a functional accessory is back in style!

3. Oversized Jean Jackets

They can be seen everywhere from a college campus to a night out–especially in the cooler seasons. Oversized jean jackets were a staple item in the 80’s and have pretty much become one again. Grunge, casual, or night-wear, these bulky pieces can be worn anywhere!

4. Bucket Hats

This trend especially blew up within the past couple of months. From being totally unseen, bucket hats one day started appearing in mall kiosks all over the place. It’s not certain whether or not they’ll stay around, or simply fade away. So stock up now before these funky hats are gone!

5. Pegged Jeans

Let’s get some clarity first, what exactly are pegged jeans? Well, pegged jeans are cuffed at the ends but in a certain way, becoming more tightly rolled towards the bottom. This trend is becoming increasingly popular among young men, and will hopefully be replacing skinny jeans.

6. Brightly Colored Makeup

One of the signature looks of the 80’s–brightly colored makeup! More specifically in this decade, the eyes are given a bold, colorful look. This has been seen on the runways of Diane von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs, Monique Lhuillier, and more. While the makeup can be tough to master and match, it’s a fun look to sport on a night out!

7. Shoulder Pads

The fierce, fun feature on every person’s top! Shoulder pads give off a powerful, sleek look that was key in the 80’s. Shoulder pads have been seen on modern-day fashion icons such as Rita Ora, Victoria Beckham, and even Kim Kardashian. Hop on the trend while it lasts!

8. Crop Tops

They’re almost like an infestation. Everywhere you look–especially in the warmer months–there’s a crop top. This look was made famous by 80’s youth and workout gear. Today this trend is accepted among not only the flat-stomached but people of all body types!

9. Spandex

Another look made famous by activewear has come back to play. Spandex of all colors, shapes and sizes were popular in the 80’s for almost any look. Today, spandex has become a part of the "sporty chic" look–commonly worn with a baseball hat or Adidas footwear.

10. High-Waist Jeans

The trend we all know and have come to love: high-waisted jeans. While they were mostly of the “mom jean” variety in the 80’s, high-waisted jeans have evolved. Today, they are seen in the form of shorts, skinny jeans, flare jeans–you name it!

So there you have it. The 80’s are back–embrace it!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
