I guess I should’ve known the snow was coming; we do live in Michigan. But when it was 60 degree in December, I really thought we had avoided it. Now, here we are, bundled up and slipping our way to class.
1. Is this class even worth it?
This is a question I ask myself every morning when my alarm goes off, regardless of the weather. But walking all the way across campus at 8am in subzero temperatures just to sit and watch the prof go through a power point that is already on BlackBoard? I’m just not sure if it’s actually worth it.
2. The air hurts my face.
Every time I’m freezing and the wind comes out of nowhere and instantly makes my face burn (can cold things burn?), I instantly picture this little guy. No matter how many scarfs or hats I wear, the wind still finds a way to hurt.
3. What if I fall?
I’ve walked down that slight decline more than enough times to know exactly how to avoid falling on my butt and making a total fool of myself. I will take a million baby steps and hold my arms out and pray that I make it down in one piece.
4. I totally should have just stayed in bed.
Right about when the wind comes out of nowhere for the millionth time, that’s when I decide that I should probably have just stayed in bed. My bed is warm. My bed has a heated blanket. My bed is cozy and most importantly – not completely freezing.
5. I can’t wait for summer.
It’s easier to deal with the wind-chill and snowflakes shooting into your eye if you think back to summer memories. Laying on the beach. Being tan. Feeling the hot sun on your skin all day long.
6. Is it too late to turn around?
I could just turn around and go straight back to bed... No... I'm already almost there. I already got up, and got (kind of) dressed. I'm already out here.
7. Am I allowed to bring a blanket to class?
Maybe if I could bring my blanket with me, then the walk wouldn't be so bad. Maybe even my electric blanket? Would that be going too far? I don't think so.
8. Half way there. I can do this!
Yeah, it's cold, but at least I'm half way there. And at least it's only a 10-minute walk. It could be longer. It'll be so nice to be in a warm building in a few minutes, where there's no wind burning my face, and no possibility of falling.
9. How many buildings can I cut through?
I'd much rather go out of my way to cut through some buildings than walking outside the entire time. Although, it really sucks walking into a warm building when you're freezing with glasses on, because suddenly you can't see a thing.
10. Wow. 20 degrees really isn't that cold.
Living in Michigan my whole life has really conditioned me to these freezing temperatures with wind-chill. I know that if I walk outside and feel cold, it must be under 10 degrees, because almost everything above that doesn't phase me anymore.
As much as we all seem to hate the snow, wind, freezing temperatures, and everything winter in Michigan has to offer, we really are all lucky to be able to experience all four seasons where we live. And when you really think about how bad this snow is right now, just remember, in a few months it’ll all be gone!
