Recently, I had the blissful opportunity to visit Dingle, Ireland, with my University. I cannot put into words how amazing the experience was, but I'm going to try and give you a list of ten things studying abroad taught me.
1. Traveling alone for the first time can be really terrifying.
The crazy lady sitting next to you on the plane might not help, either.
2. Jet lag is a real thing and it sucks.
SLEEP WHENEVER YOU CAN. I MEAN IT.
3. Foreign currency is something you will have to get used to.
In my case, the lack of tipping, tax, and the fact that coins were actually valuable took a lot of getting used to.
4. You will find friends in the most coincidental of ways.
You're all in the same awkward, inexperienced boat. You'll find comfort in your fellow Americans.
5. The scenery will definitely take your breath away.
There a few things better than sheep on a hill.
6. All cultures are truly different.
Some things are better left alone and respected.
7. Foreign people will have their own opinions about American life.
And sometimes, they're not too friendly about our choice of politicians. Let them speak, and refrain from challenging anyone.
8. Food is better abroad.
This is a proven fact.
9. It's okay to miss people/home.
Missing people who aren't with you is inevitable. It's a natural feeling, but just know you'll be home soon, and that you need to enjoy this experience while you still have it.
10. The memories and the friendships will truly last forever.
Nothing bonds people together like a magical experience. Cherish those memories.
If you're going abroad soon, take my advice. Step back, close your eyes, breathe, and live in the moment. The world is yours.
