"How Many Fingers Am I Holding Up?"

10 Things A Girl With Glasses Is Tired Of Hearing

I was five years old. I had my first eye test at school. When they asked me to read the letters back to them, I asked "Are they above or below the black line?" After zooming in, that's when I realized those "black lines" I saw were actually the letters I was supposed to read back. My mom was called and told I needed to get my eyes checked at an eye doctors. That was the day I learned I needed glasses.

Almost 15 years later, I now rely on my glasses. Without them things become a little hazy around the edges. Throughout the years, I have been asked a wide variety of questions about my glasses, however they always seem to fall around the same categories. So I decided to answer 10 of the most asked questions I have been asked.

1. "Can you see without them? How many fingers am I holding up?"

Okay so these have been asked if I take my glasses off to clean them (I can not stand dirty glasses. Major pet peeve of mine). Yes my vision is blurry but you do not need to repeatedly wave your hand in front of my face.

People act like this is what you see:

When in reality it's:

2. "Are those real or are you just trying to look smart?"

Yes these are real glasses with a real prescription.

3. "Why don't you just wear contacts?"

I do not wear contacts for many reasons.

A) Because they kind of freak me out. And to those I have yelled at over the years to please go in the other room to take out your floating contacts, I apologize. It creeps me out to see someone playing with their eyes B) Glasses not only are helpful for seeing, but they also are a great protection for your eyes. If you get hit in the face it hits your glasses and you don't have to worry about losing a contact or having your eye swell (Learned that lesson during dodgeball at school)

4. Can I try them on?

(Immediately getting followed by them snatching your glasses and yelling "Wow you really can't see!") Okay now that you have gotten everyone's attention, give me my glasses back before anyone else takes them. This is one of the most annoying questions in my opinion since my glasses have been repeatedly taken from me to try on.

5. "Can you watch 3D movies?"

For me, 3D can be annoying since you have to put those glasses over your normal glasses. I have gone to only three 3D movies that I can remember and I haven't actually seen it as 3D. I see it as a normal movie but if I take either of the glasses off the screen gets blurry so I put them back on.

6. "How do you deal with rain or steam?"

When it rains, I always make sure to have a jacket with a hood so I can use the hood to shield my glasses so I can see. It works about 80% of the times. The other 20% I just continuously stop to clean my glasses off. With steam I just have to wipe them down also.

7. "They're transitional? How is that possible for the glasses to know when you're inside or outside?"

(Keep in mind this question was asked by a college student). I do not know how glasses are made, but when you step outside, the sunglasses go dark so you don't have to worry about having glare. Going back inside can be irritating at first because the glasses are dark and take a minute or two to readjust making whatever room you stepped into look very dark.

8. "Do you ever take them off?"

I take them off when I sleep or am taking a shower but am sure to keep them in an eye glass case nearby so when I am ready they can go right back on.

9. "Do you take them off for pictures?"

When I was younger, I always questioned why I was always yelled at to "Take the glasses off for pictures!" Only recently have I come to notice if I forget to take them off, you see the flash bounce off my glasses.

10. Do they need to be adjusted?

Your eyesight changes over time as well as your prescription so I need to find new glasses every 2-3 years. Sometimes I need to go in earlier just to have the nose piece adjusted because it either fell off if is just very loose.

So when you see a girl with glasses remember this:

1. Never take their glasses! They will get mad.

2. Please don't call them "four-eyes". Talking from experience, it has not nor will never be funny.

and 3. DO NOT EVER TAKE THEIR GLASSES! (Wait I said that already but it's important to know because you will get hurt)

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
