Being a girl somehow makes people think they can make comment after comment not only on our sexuality but in a way that critiques every little thing that we do. Whether we are walking down the street or sitting in a classroom, here are 10 of the things every single one of us girls have heard and shouldn't have.
10. "Are you going to eat that all by yourself?"
Yes, yes I am. I may be 5'4 but just because I'm a female does not mean I can't out-eat you. Ladies, never ever, I repeat ever say no to that order of fries you wanted just because someone across from you is eating a salad. Salad is not good for the soul like warm, extra greasy, deep fried potatoes. This is a fact.
This does not even deserve a comment.
8. "You look prettier with make-up on."
First of all, if I'm wearing makeup it isn't for you. It's because I want to. Girls, your beauty is not defined by how good you are at contouring or what shade of MAC lipstick you are wearing. Your beauty holds its strongest definition in the way that you treat others and by the passion in your eyes when you talk about something you love. It is shown in a way that cannot be drawn on with artificial materials. Pretty is just as much on the inside as it is on the outside, if not more.
7. "You have cramps? Come on, it can't hurt that bad."
We have all heard this and 100 percent of the time it is coming out of a male's mouth.
6. "This is why women shouldn't drive."
Is that what you said to your mom when she dropped you off every single morning at school and picked you up every afternoon? Is that what you said to the woman who chauffeured you to every little league practice? That's what I thought.
5. "He'll never like you if you ____ "
If there's one thing I've learned it's that life is too short to be anyone but yourself. You can't force yourself to fit into a box that was never made for you in the first place. If a guy is even worth liking, he'll never ask you to try to be anyone else. Don't shape yourself into someone else just because one guy doesn't like the complete sculpture. You are art and you are worthy of someone's full admiration without having to change in the first place.
4. "Are you going out like that?"
Whether a girl is wearing sweats and a baggy T-shirt or shorts and a spaghetti strap top, don't say this. Just don't.
3. "Women aren't smart."
Judit Polgar, Marilyn Savant, Marie Curie, Emmy Noether, Grace Hopper, Ruth Lawrence, Margaret Thatcher, Florence Nightingale, just to name a few.
2. "Calm down."
If there is one sure-fire way to make a girl do exactly the opposite of what you want, this is it.
1. "Shouldn't you be in the kitchen?"
Ah yes, in the kitchen. Where the knives are. Perfect.
