Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I love Pretty Little Liars. It's my guilty pleasure, and I've watched it diligently since it premiered years ago, when I was a wee middle-schooler. The twists and turns, albeit completely unrealistic, keep me on the edge of my seat and sometimes sleeping with a night-light on just in case "A" decides to pay me a visit in my dorm room on a Wednesday night. As a stressed and emotional college student, I live for the outlandish drama, suspense and ruthlessness from four teenage girls (of course played by super-hot actresses in their late twenties to early thirties) because it's the perfect distraction from physiological psychology exams and literary theory essays. In addition, I cling to Emily Fields's character in each and every episode, because I will take all the LGBTQIA+ media representation I can get, especially because it's so limited. It is exciting to see the portrayal of a femme gay woman around my age navigate her sexuality and her relationships (although, again, understanding that it's not the most realistic).
Having said all of this, the show is WILD. A lot of the plot lines are outlandish and disconnected. A lot of the characters' motives don't come together, and a lot of "A's" moves are made and then never revisited. Viewers are constantly left hanging and confused by pieces of the puzzle that have been laid out but don't seem to fit anywhere.
Let's take a look at some of these moments:
1. Ian?? Garrett?? Shauna?? Melissa?? Maya?? Why are these characters relevant again?
I'm inclined to believe that when the writers of this show set out to develop the series they had absolutely no vision of the overall story arc. If they did, then they wouldn't have forgotten about the characters that they made so relevant in the beginning that never appear again in the later seasons.
2. Remember When Jenna Dropped Off The Face Of The Earth For A While? And Now She's Back?
I just want to know where she went, why she's back, and why she's invested in this show to begin with?
3. Why Does Emily Always Get Stuck With Awful Girlfriends?
Although I'm not surprised that the gay girl gets stuck with the bulk of the crap that happens on this show. She doesn't even have to do anything for A to take a giant dump on her. Leave it to heteronormativity, am I right my LGBTQIA+ sisters? And don't even get me started on the Cece/Charlotte plot...
4. Also, Remember Ravenswood?
That super creepy town that got Caleb a spin-off series that failed miserably? Sure it added an eerie feel to the show, but it was so unnecessary. The time spent on Ravenswood could've gotten us what we really want: ANSWERS.
5. How Did These Women Graduate High School?
Did they ever do their homework? Study? Participate in any extra curricular activities? If so, there's no way their mental states were healthy enough to get through all of that psychological torture without intensive care, which they clearly neglected to chase after A.
6. Hanna's Family Had Money Problems But She Dressed Like An A-List Celebrity And Lived In A Giant House?
The Marins were strapped for cash hard in the first two seasons, but not once did they actually make the cut-backs that you'd have to make in real-life if you were really struggling financially.
7. Their Parents Just Let Them Run Around The State Of Pennsylvania No Questions Asked
Even after they knew their children were being harassed and stalked! Plus, about half way into the series half of the parents just stop getting screen time or have better things to do than take care of their kids.
8. How Did They Not Know That It Wasn't Ali's Body They Found In The First Episode?
I'd like to speak to Rosewood's medical examiners and have a word with them about their procedures. We learn that Ali is still alive about halfway into the series, and even later we learn that Bethany Young was the name of the girl who the police found in the DiLaurentis's backyard. But they weren't twins? They barely looked alike? This makes no sense.
9. The Ezra As "A" Plot Was Unreasonable And Irrelevant.
He knew Ali and he wanted to write a book? A freaking book? That's ridiculous. Plus, they never revisit this plot line and Aria just falls back into his arms. It's unbelievable.
10. Why Didn't They Go To The Police From The Very Beginning?
There are a couple of problems with this dilemma. One, there's no way the cops could've gotten away with the stuff that they did. Two, I don't know about you all, but I would've taken the L on the whole "Jenna thing," to avoid years of psychological torture. A couple of months of community service and then back to the old grind. Especially because Spencer's parents had money and law credentials. It makes no sense. But of course, if they did that, there wouldn't have been much of a show.
I could go on for a million years and trace the incongruousness of Pretty Little Liars if only I had the time and energy, but alas, I do not. The final ten episodes are premiering in April 2017, and all we can do is sit back, relax and take whatever comes at us.
