I can't exactly pinpoint the actual moment where I went from just plain old dog owner to crazy obsessed dog mom, but I can tell you that my dog somehow managed to change the rule from "you sleep in the crate every night" to "the human only gets an inch of bed" in the blink of an eye. I guarantee that if you know dogs are the ultimate best friends, you too will understand these 10 things I think every day.
1. There's a secret code that if a pet is sleeping on you, you do not wake or move them.
I'll be an hour late for class, a wedding, my grandma's birthday party, or my own birth before I'd move a sleeping dog off my lap. Very cuddles, much warm.
2. You tell your dog "not on the couch" but know they actually own every inch of furniture in your house.
People either get off your dog's "spot" or get sat on. 100% their choice.
3. At least 25% of your dinner goes to them.
And it's only because my dog looks starving literally all the time. I'd hate eating kibble for every meal too.
4. "Just having a night in" actually translates to "I feel bad for neglecting my dog today, so I'm just going to ignore humans and snuggle with my pup until I'm dead."
Which is never shameful. Ever.
5. You ask your dog for advice, and actually take it.
You think I should take that job? Should I keep putting off my term paper? Should I really eat cheese even though I'm lactose intolerant? Do you think I should text him? Whatever the question, your dog has the answer. And your dog is always right.
6. Walks are your favorite part of the day, too.
It's honestly the ultimate bonding experience. And yes, it does count as a workout.
7. No one will ever snuggle as well as they do.
No matter what you tell your significant other, your dog will always be your number one cuddle buddy. Or maybe your dog is actually your significant other, either way best cuddles ever.
8. You apologize for your dog licking people in their face, but in reality you don't actually understand why other people don't like it.
Because the best part of your day is coming home to them being happy to see you, and their lick just means they don't hate you for leaving them, therefore other people should be appreciative of the licks too.
9. You simply cannot have enough pictures of your dog on your phone.
And you are not afraid to whip your phone out to show your dogs to your friends, and your family, and your haircutter, and the clerk at the store, and the stranger you just saw on the street. It's fine, you dog is essentially a model.
10. Nothing will every compare to the unconditional, unrelenting love they show you every day. No matter what.
They're our perfect best friends and we have no idea what we did to deserve them, but life wouldn't be the same without them.
