10 Struggles of Being a Picky Eater

Being a picky eater is hard. I didn't ask to not like tomatoes or fish. Sometimes I wish I just liked everything, but I don't. Call me a wimp all you want, nothing is going to change. I was born to pick apart my food, and that's just the way it's going to be, even if it comes with a few struggles.

1. Sweating when you go to a nice restaurant

They probably don't serve plain chicken strips unless you order from a kids menu. When you order a meal you'll drive the server crazy with all of the stuff you don't want.

2. Being called "boring"

You probably order your hamburger with just ketchup or your pizza with just cheese, and everyone looks at you like you're stupid. It's fine. I'll take that comment with a grain of salt (which is probably the only other thing I'll actually put on my food).

3. Having to make your own separate dinner because you don't like what your family is having

Your mom is probably frustrated that you won't just try it, but you go ahead and make a sandwich or pour a bowl of cereal instead. It's either that or starve.

4. Choking down food when you have to be polite

You get nervous going to someone else's house for dinner. What if they make something you don't like? What if it doesn't taste the way your family makes it? Then there's that horrifying moment when they sit the food out in front of you and you know you're going to have to put on a brave face and eat it anyway to avoid being rude.

5. Pretending to not like something your mom made you try

It's just not worth your pride to admit that it wasn't actually as bad as you thought it was going to be. In fact, it was actually pretty good (but no one can ever know that).

6. Knowing you'll have to work out more because eating healthy is not on your very selective menu

Vegetables? Nope.

7. The people in your life are constantly annoyed by your consistent pickiness.

"Can we eat here?"

"That's a sushi place, so no."

8. People are constantly trying to tell you to trying something new

I've gone my entire life without this particular food. I will survive.

9. Having to dissect your food when there's stuff in it you don't like

I don't care how small those onions are. I know they are in there. I will taste them, so I will find them. The pile of unwanted food on my plate will continue to grow.

10. Wishing you liked more foods

I really wish I weren't a picky eater, but I am. I don't know why I was given these weak taste buds, but it's the life I have to live. I want to like all of those healthy vegetables or try that Thai food, but I just can't.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
