Upon entering my house, the first thing you notice probably won’t be the big windows or the number of plants living in the front rooms, but it’ll be the sheer number of books that cohabitate with me and my fiance. The first step is admitting you have a problem, so… My name is Megan Bernard and I just might be addicted to books and reading. Here are 10 reasons you might be addicted too:
- Summer is an exciting time -- but not because of the anticipation of swimming in the lake or going on an exotic vacation. You’re suddenly free from things like homework and you have all of this extra time on your hands. All that extra time can be spent reading and devouring book and book after book… and nothing sounds better to you than this.
- You never go anywhere without a book in your bag. Going to your grandmother’s house? I have a book. Going home for the sole purpose of visiting your parents? Yep, there’s a book in my bag. Off to the theater? Yeah, there’s even a book in my bag then. You just never know! That's why I had, like, five books in my back pack when I went off to school.
- You take the time to alphabetize and organize your books like you would in a public library. That way, you know where just about any book lives and you can return it to its home after you’ve finished reading.
- The greatest invention is when your local library launches a digital website. Suddenly, you don’t even have to leave your house to get more books. You just enter your library card number and suddenly you can download dozens of eBooks and audiobooks throughout the summer. Isn’t that music to your ears?
- “What’s your favorite book?” is the most painful question to answer. Even “What’s your favorite book right now?” is hard. It’s like picking favorites with your own children.
- You have your favorite books in multiple languages. Not that you can read those languages necessarily, but you love having them. I have Harry Potter in French, Dutch and English, but my French is only conversational and my Dutch is rudimentary.
- Your “Currently Reading” list holds upwards of three books. And the best part is, you can keep each storyline straight while you read them at the same time. Bonus: No one in your life seems to understand how you can possibly do this. Their minds are blown by your skills.
- You have a GoodReads account just so you can figure out what to read next. Plus you can get to know your friends and family by seeing what they’re interested in reading and reading their thoughts about a book that they recently finished. It’s a good way to get to know the people in your life a little bit better. Is that weird?
- The library scene from Beauty and the Beast is a dream come true! Seriously, who wouldn’t want to have a library that is this grand and magnificent?
- "I hate reading" is a very confusing statement. Just like... how? Why? What did the book ever do to you?
