10 Reasons You Should Watch "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World"

“Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World” is 2010 action-comedy film based on a series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, and directed by Edgar Wright (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”). It stars Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anna Kendrick, and a whole slew of other actors and actresses that you have more than likely seen before in other popular films. Despite positive reviews, the film did not fulfill budget requirements to be considered even a moderate success. But thanks to home sales, the film has garnered a cult following.

The bottom line is this film is amazing, and if you need any more convincing, here are 10 reasons to check it out.

1. Bill Hader’s narration.

Former SNL cast member Bill Hader’s voice is the first thing the audience hears in the movie, and although it has very little to do with the actual film, it sets a tone for how goofy this film gets throughout. His introductory words help set what the rest of the film is going to be like.

2. The soundtrack.

A lot of indie films will have a really odd or quirky soundtrack to go along with the incredibly awkward characters that appear and interact on screen. “Scott Pilgrim” is no different, except that the soundtrack seems to fit the action and emotion of the story so much more seamlessly than many of its contemporaries. The music helps tell the story. This is aided by the fact that about half of the soundtrack is original music by bands that are characters in the film, like Sex Bob-Omb or Crash and the Boys. The soundtrack is as much of the story as the actual script is.

3. Strong female characters.

Not only in ability kick major butt, but also in development as interesting and relatable characters, the female roles like Ramona, Knives, and Kim stand as some of the best and most likable of all of the characters in the film. All three of these women give strong performances in a film dominated by a rather submissive male lead, making their parts all the more awesome. And even side female roles like Anna Kendrick and Mae Whitman are just as great and memorable.

4. Chris Evans and Brandon Routh.

From the guy in “Not Another Teen Movie” to Johnny Storm to this film, the transition of Chris Evans to a serious action star in “Captain America” is strange when you see his performance in this film. He plays such a goofy and offbeat character in this film. Same goes for Brandon Routh, who played Superman only a few years before this film was released. Both of their characters are hilarious and over-the-top. Overall, their small roles are some of the most enjoyable parts of the entire film.

5. Ramona’s hair.

It changes so much; it’s hard to keep up (not really, but you get the idea).

6. The respect for the bass guitar.

Okay, I’m a little biased here, but with Scott Pilgrim being a bass player like me, the amount of bass music and playing is much higher than your average film; even your average music-based film. Plus, the music battle that occurs halfway through the film is one of the best scenes of not only the film, but of all cinema.

Okay, maybe that’s a little overzealous, but it isreally awesome.

7. The on-screen text.

Edgar Wright is a pretty innovative director in his own right, but the use of text on-screen seems like it would be a bad idea for expositional and transitional information for any other film. Yet somehow in this film, it works wonderfully. Also, using KAPOW! and BAM! as on-screen text to emphasis action harkens back to the desire for the film look aesthetically like a comic book, just as the other text was meant to do. The humor of film allows for the text to not feel distracting, but rather like a living comic book, which is what the filmmakers were doing anyway.

8. One-liners and side characters.

The humor of this film is one of its most dominating qualities (if that was somehow hard to tell from my description in this article so far), and the one-liners in the film are fantastic. Almost every character, big role or small role, has at least one one-liner in the film and they are all hilarious.

And speaking of small role characters, never have I seen a film where the minor role characters have such a presence without generally affecting the plot at all. Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Johnny Simmons, and Mark Webber all give great performances, with each of them put into perfect roles for their acting styles. This is probably equal parts great directing or casting, and the fact that the film overall has a great and talented young cast.

9. The Accuracy to original source material.

This is one of the few cases where the filmmakers were able to be almost perfect and extremely detailed in their accuracy of the transfer from book to film. This is aided by a few things: Bryan Lee O’Malley aided in the filmmaking process (although not heavily), and the fact that the original source material was a graphic novel as compared to a regular novel. There are definite and obvious changes from the original to this film, as there is with any adaptation, which can be seen if you choose to read the graphic novels, but overall, there is little major or consequential information taken out of the film that remained in the original source.

10. Wallace Wells.

The best thing about the entire film has to be Scott’s roommate/gay best friend, Wallace. Kieran Culkin, brother of massively famous child star Macaulay Culkin, portrays Wallace Wells and commands the screen every time he is on it, captivating the audience’s attention in every scene he is in. He’s funny, charming, and has perfect timing on his humor, delivering the best dead pan sarcasm of a film dribbled with dark and awkward humor. Culkin shines as one of, if not, the most strong actors of the cast, impressive when compared to how experienced the rest of the cast is in doing comedies, or generally offbeat roles.

Now, obviously, this is just my opinion, in terms of how great this film is and what point I chose to pick out and emphasize, but I would still highly suggest seeing this film at least once. It’s funny; it’s odd; it’s insanely easy to quote; but most of all, it has heart and tells a unique story that anyone can enjoy.

So, go and check it out, and let me know what you thought in the comments!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
