The struggles of long hair are something a lot of us can relate to. The countless hours we’ve spent dying, styling, and brushing all contribute to spending big bucks and lost time. That’s not to say that long hair isn’t great, because it is. To all those that have long hair and wear it proud, you’re the strong ones. We salute you. But for those that are just tired of growing it long, here's motivation to chop it all off.
1. It won't get caught in a scarf.
Wearing scarves no longer creates bird’s nests when you have short hair. Because of this, it’s common to see individuals who have long hair pinning it into a bun when wearing a scarf because the snarls that will ensue are a pain to detangle. That also goes with long hair in general. No more snarls, no more tangles, and no more decisions to rip out parts of hair because of knots.
2. It's less heavy!
Going short means having less headaches, actually. The strain that long hair puts on your scalp is tremendous, and if you have thick hair, it’s particularly worse. Chopping the locks could mean the end of near-constant headaches. Additionally, your hair will have more volume and more curl when chopped shorter (if your hair has natural curl, that is).
3. It costs less to dye.
Visits to the salon and home dye jobs become a hell of a lot easier when hair is shorter. Getting highlights with long hair at a salon cost me $100+ every four weeks, but when I chopped it to shoulder-length, it dropped down to $80. The same goes for box dyes. Where longer hair may need two boxes (which can run up to $20), short hair only needs one. Half the hair, half the price (as far as box dyes go. Nevertheless, you’ll be saving a lot of money).
4. Styling time is faster.
Want to save time in the morning? Cut your hair! Less hair means less to style. That goes for blow-drying, curling, straightening, etc. Everything is done a lot quicker and with less effort and less burns (trust me).
5. It won't get stuck!
Am I the only one who repeatedly got my hair stuck in backpacks, zippers, and couches? Maybe…maybe not. But regardless of my unfortunate circumstances, getting long hair stuck in things can become a struggle. Constant tugging and ripping of the hair can lead to those nasty headaches and frustrating tantrums (was that only me, again?). Chopping the locks means avoiding getting hair stuck in random places where you’d least expect. No more surprise hair tugging! And, hello? Less tantrums.
6. It's much easier to brush.
I will endorse this point more so than any other, because having long hair is such a pain if your hair typically gets knotted after washing it. It’s an absolute nightmare, because any wrong stroke of the brush will create little balls of tangled hair, which are virtually impossible to detangle. Wreaking havoc on the condition of your brush bristles in tandem with the amount of detangling spray or hair oil will burn holes in your pocket, and probably put holes on your scalp. Let’s just avoid this mess altogether, shall we?
7. You'll use less shampoo and conditioner!
Spinning off of the previous point, spending less money on shampoo and conditioner is a godsend. More hair = more product. (However, shampoo can typically be applied singularly to the scalp. But everyone does this in their own way) Therefore, going short means using less product, which results in longer lasting shampoo and conditioner. Stretch that dollar!
8. Your styling products will last longer.
In addition to the shampoo and conditioner, styling products also last longer as well. This is beneficial if you typically spend more on styling products than you do shampoo and conditioner. Hair oils, hairsprays, heat-styling serums, and so on, will cost you less in the long run if you chop your hair short. It’s great because they last so much longer. Yet again, less hair = less product.
9. There's a huge variation of cuts.
As far as types of hairstyles, short hair has the most variety. It’s easier to see subtle changes or even extreme ones on short hair because it’s typically off the shoulder. Edgy asymmetrical cuts, layers, blunt cuts, bobs, you name it! The list is endless. There’s a style of short hair for everyone. And if you don’t like it, it’ll grow out soon, anyways.
10. No split ends!
In accompaniment with types of short hair, cutting any hair means no split ends! So long to trying to grow out long hair that’ll result in frazzled lifeless ends. The introduction of short hair into your life can bring back much needed vitality and bounce! Your hair will also be easier to run your fingers through and style with heat products. Not to mention, all of that shine will come back!
