Life in general is a struggle, but life as a fangirl is an added struggle. Fangirls are regarded as odd people in society. As a fangirl, we do not conform to societies norms. Being fangirl makes it hard to talk about fandoms that they like, meet fellow fans, buying merchandise, falling for fictional characters, and learning to even. Before I go into the 5 reasons a Fangirl struggles, let me tell you what a fandom is. Google defines fandom as, "the fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, etc., regarded collectively as a community or subculture." The example Google gives with this definition is the "Breaking Bad" fandom. Basically, if there is a book, TV show, or movie etc., then there is a fandom that goes with it.
1. Talking About Their Fandom
It can be extremely hard to talk about fandom depending on what fandom that is. The Marvel fandom can usually talk freely in public because most people love superheroes and Marvel fangirls don't get questioned. Supernatural fans are not so lucky, here are a couple things Supernatural fans say that get them looked at funny.
" God is a deadbeat dad."
"Lucifer is so awesome!"
"The King of Hell is badass."
"Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus
omnis satanica potestas..."
2. Meeting People in the Fandom
Talking about their fandom can also be hard if this is the fangirl's struggle. It is not always easy to find someone in their fandom. Once a fangirl does find someone in their fandom though, they won't stop talking for hours and will consider that person their new best friend!
3. Buying Fandom Merchandise
Fandom merchandise can be expensive, especially if you get a lot of it, but it can be so much fun to buy! Fangirl's tend to want merchandise to decorate their home, clothing, and cars. That brings up the problem of space. All of this merchandise can fill up a house fast! The amount of money spent and space taken up can be multiplied by how many fandoms a fangirl follows.
4. Loving Fictional Characters
This can be one of the biggest struggles for fangirls. Fangirls become a part of their fandoms. This makes the characters their family and friends. It's easy to "fall" for a character, especially if the characters are, Steve Rogers, Dean Winchester, Stiles Stilinski, Sherlock Holmes, Draco Malfoy, Derek Morgan, etc. "Falling" for fictional characters pulls fangirls further from the real world, but it makes them happy!
5. Learning to Even
"I can't even," is a phrase that every fangirl utters at least once. This phrase is uttered when there is so much emotion over a fandom that the fangirl can just not handle it. This normally happens with crying, screaming, and hitting things. Not all fangirls are violent, but every group has its extremists.
