While we all know there are a million and one things to do as a college student, it is so critically important to take the time to read. Reading is a valuable way to learn about the world, gain valuable insights on other cultures and other societies, and become better-rounded. Studies have shown that reading for fun and taking time to read increases cognitive function and reduces stress. In this spirit, I have put together a list of 10 must read books for college kids.
1. "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee
Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” is an amazing, must read example of perfect American literature. More than that, though, it is a wonderful exploration of race and coming of age in the Deep South. It’s a must-read for all college students of any age.
2. "Maximum Achievement" by Brian Tracy
This is a wonderful self help book for any 20-something. It teaches goal setting strategies and aims at helping you get the most out of your life. It’s a quick read and a fabulous guide to making your life more productive.
3. The "Harry Potter" series by J.K. Rowling
On the one hand, if you haven’t read these, you should for the pure fact that they are some of the most popular books of our generation. Additionally, the "Harry Potter" series is an excellent coming of age series, exploring right and wrong. A must-read.
4. "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed
Wild is a go to book for anyone who has fallen on hard times and is just trying to figure out how to get back on their feet. There are a million and one books about women who have fallen on hard times then go and do something crazy (like hiking a trail, climbing a mountain, etc.) to feel better. But this one is excellently written and truly inspirational.

6. "Ecology of a Cracker Childhood" by Janisse Ray
Not only is this book excellently written, it is also a wonderful examination of growing up in a backwoods area that has long been forgotten by common society. It’s an examination of coming of age with a little ecology and a lot of southern heritage.
7. "Wonder" by Raquel Palacio
While this is a young adult novel, it is a must read for anyone. It weaves the story of a child with a disability and will give its readers a new perspective on the world and on disabilities.
8. "Yes Please" by Amy Poehler
It’s funny. It’s witty. It will make you stop and think about yourself and the world as a whole. It’s an honest depiction of Amy Poehler’s childhood and rise to the top of comedy.
9. "The Opposite of Loneliness" by Marina Keegan
