Personally, I believe there is nothing better than life than documentaries. Whether its about crime, biographies, social issues, or scientific background, I love laying in bed after a long, hard day and watching a riveting documentary on Netflix. So I decided to create a list of my top ten favorite documentaries currently on Netflix to inspire some of you to watch and learn!
1. "Making a Murderer"
This Netflix original and widely acclaimed series has sparked interest about the American justice system. The documentary series tells the story of Steven Avery, who was wrongly accused of a crime and served two whole decades in prison before his innocence was revealed. Warning: upon watching this, you may lose faith in the entire American justice system and the apparent doctrine “Innocent until proven guilty”
2. "The Hunting Ground"
This tear-jerking documentary highlights the horrifying reality of the sexual assault epidemic across college campuses nationwide. The segment follows the stories of university students who are survivors of sexual assault and universities’ inability to address this pressing topic. A must-see for students currently enrolled in college or entering their first year this fall.
3. "The Mask You Live In"
This documentary accentuates the toxic nature of American society’s obsession with masculinity. It highlights the damaging effects of viewing men as superior to women and many social/cultural aspects of the toxic issue. Listen to stories of men all over the country tells their stories about the mask of masculinity they have been forced to wear since birth.
4. "Soaked in Bleach"
Conspiracy theories, a dead Grunge singer, and a potential murder all combine to create one of the most riveting documentaries I’ve seen yet. Soaked in Bleach follows the investigation of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain’s suicide, which may not have been suicide at all. The documentary provides convincing evidence to make you question everything you once knew about your favorite 90’s rock star.
5. " Happy"
When you’re need of some cheering up, this documentary is definitely the one for you. Unlike many of the other documentaries I have mentioned in this article, Happy is extremely lighthearted and uplifting. It tells the story of people all across the globe and how they have found happiness within their own lives, no matter where or who they are.
6. "Dear Zachary"
This one is just a tear-jerker. Bring lots of tissues if you plan to watch it. Kurt Kuenne created this documentary as a tribute to his murdered friend Andrew Bagby and the heart-breaking custody battle between Andrew’s parents and his ex-girlfriend.
7. "Mind of a Rampage Killer"
Who doesn’t love a good murder documentary? Dive deep into the minds of sociopathic serial killers in this British documentary. The killers explain their motives for their murderous ways in this thrilling crime sequence. An interesting watch from start to finish that creates an interesting viewpoint of human nature as a whole.
8. "Iris"
Calling all devoted fashion lovers! This documentary tells the story of the creative and notable fashion icon, Iris Apfel. At 93 years old, she still rocks it like no one else. Enough said.
9. "Exit Through the Gift Shop"
You’ve seen his graffiti artwork splattered across the internet for years now and may have even seen it in person. Exit Through the Gift Shop tells the story of Bansky, a mysterious graffiti artist who refuses to keep pressing societal issues within the shadows.
10. "Miss Representation"
Lastly, the first documentary I ever really watched. A little cheesy at parts, but the perfect documentary for my fellow feminists out there. This hard hitting documentary sheds light on the misogynistic and sexist nature of the news media nowadays, focusing too much on women’s appearances rather than their thoughts and inspiring ideas.
