As someone who knows what it's like to be perpetually single, I know all too well the days when you are really fed up with your single status. Every rom-com makes you wonder when your very own fairy-tale ending will come, and every cute couple you see holding hands on campus makes you cringe from the overwhelming cuteness. For now, while you still search for that soul mate there is something you can do to make the idea of a relationship a bit less appealing. Pop some popcorn and plop onto the couch for a movie session; here are 10 movies to make you feel better about your single status.
1. "Eat Pray Love"
If you are looking for girl empowerment, this movie is for you. After a failed marriage and the realization that she has never truly been alone, a woman embarks on a year-long journey where a man is not her motivation. This movie is also based on a true story, making it's even more inspirational for those of us who are currently living the single life.
2. "Blue Valentine"
A girl in trouble falls in love with a stand-up guy who is willing to do anything for her. It seems perfect, but through the years forgotten dreams are realized and the relationship begins to crumble. This movie shows us that even the sweetest of relationships can fall apart.
3. "Love Actually"
From a cheating husband, to falling in love with your best friend's new bride, this movie has enough relationship drama to hold us over for quite a while. These swirling stories about many different types of relationships come together in the end because they somehow connected to one another. While a few end happily, the rest leave us feeling a bit depressed and glad that we are not going through relationship drama.
4. "Revolutionary Road"
This movie begins as a classic love story about a man and a woman who want to live differently from those around them. Dreams of adventure together unfortunately fade and the relationship begins to fail. You watch as their once flawless relationship falls apart, and you wonder how they could have ever gotten there. This is yet again, another movie with a tragic ending that leaves us glad to be single.
5. "500 Days Of Summer"
This relationship is the epitome of relationship goals. Their hilarious and sweet relationship makes us wish we were them, so why would this make us happy to be single? Well, when this relationship meets its demise, we feel the heartbreak almost as much as they seem to. This movie will make you glad to be single just for the purpose of avoiding a heartbreak like theirs.
6. The "Twilight" Saga
Let's not pretend that we weren't obsessed with Bella and Edward Cullen. Reading and watching the "Twilight" Saga is still a guilty pleasure, but when you take a deeper look into the relationship, there are some major glass shattering moments that occur. How many normal or full conversations did Bella and Edward have that didn't involve awkward pauses filled with heavy breathing? Who can forget the love triangle between Edward, Bella, and Jacob that somehow turned into Jacob falling in love with Bella and Edward's daughter? It all seems a bit creepy when you put it all in perspective, especially when you remember that there are vampires.
7. "Brokeback Mountain"
This movie is a real tearjerker. The love story takes place over many years and follows the two men as they attempt to stay in contact even after the affair is over. The two try to move on with their lives, but ultimately cannot get over each other, resulting in the tragic ending. This movie will not only make you feel better that you are single, but also might make you never want to be in a relationship.
8. "Bridget Jones's Diary"
Bridget Jones may be the most relatable characters for all awkward women of this generation. She's cute, fun, quirky, and, let's not forget, clumsy. Her tendency to embarrass herself at the most inconvenient times causes belly-aching laughter. Yet, when it comes down to it, Bridget is strong and independent and while she may fall in love in the end, she reminds us that it's okay to be single.
9. "Legally Blonde"
Elle Woods. What else is there to say? Her life was perfectly planned around a man and when he left her brokenhearted, she followed him all the way to Harvard Law School. She is there first for a jerk, and then she realizes her mistake and leaves him in the dust left by her high-speed sports car to success. Elle shows us that success doesn't come from who you marry, but what you do for yourself. She is yet again another strong, independent woman who doesn't need a relationship.
10. "Gone Girl"
If you are anything like me, this movie left your jaw dropped to the floor. Is he or isn't he bad? Is she or isn't she dead?
