I’m partial to endless re-runs of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, but every once in a while you just need a good movie and a comfy couch, especially when the weather outside isn’t too bright. This list was not an easy one to compile, considering the endless number of list-worthy movies. But here, in no particular order, is my attempt.
1. Sweet Home Alabama
Honestly, this movie is great any day, under any circumstances. Watching Reese Witherspoon leave and find her true love and herself just hits it home. Plus, this movie gave us possibly one of the greatest pick up lines from a 10 year old: "Why would you wanna marry me anyhow?" "So I can kiss you anytime I want."
2. 102 Dalmatians
A Disney classic made with real people, this movie brings you back to your single digit days; the parrot talks, the good guy saves abandoned puppies, and Cruella de Vil gets baked into a cake.
3. Taken
A movie almost as dark as the sky outside, who could forget Liam Neeson's famous conversation with his daughter's kidnappers?
4. It Takes Two
Mary Kate and Ashley have done it again. In a Parent Trap-esque tale, the twins switch places in a last ditch attempt to bring their parents together. I never understood how these two got away with so much, but I always wanted to find out.
5. What Dreams May Come
Watching Robin Williams loose his whole family and attempt to save them in his own version of Heaven and Hell is an all day event. At almost 2 hours long, and several more hours of trying to put yourself back together, every tear is worth it.
6. Bridge to Terabithia
It's not all sad, until it is. And then its REALLY sad. While I've never watched this movie without crying, the lesson behind it and the sudden urge to just hug your best friends can't go unacknowledged.
7. Water For Elephants
PSA: this movie is not about elephants. Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon venture into the world of forbidden love, love that always seems to hurt, and shows just how far people will go for the ones they care about most. Easily one of the few books turned into a movie that didn't completely destroy the plot line. I won't go as far as saying the movie is better than the book, but it's pretty close.
8. The Shrek Series
If you think Shrek isn't one of the greatest cinematic creations of our time, you're lying to yourself and everyone knows it.
9.Practical Magic
Sandra Bullock plays a witch who has wanted nothing her whole life except to be normal. When a curse on the women of her family places her husband at the center of a tragic accident, she finally takes the steps to accepting who she is. Oh, and her and her sister kill her abusive boyfriend, bring him back to life, and have to figure out how to get rid of him again. It's funny, engaging, and they eat chocolate cake for breakfast.
10. Say Anything
John Cusack holds a boombox outside his girlfriends window playing "their song." That is all.
