Dogs are known for being man’s best friend, and every day they teach us important life lessons that often times go unnoticed. Dogs are amazing creatures and can offer us so much more than just their companionship.
1. Stay humble.
Dogs are one of the only creatures on the earth that love you more than they love themselves. They give freely to us without asking for anything in return.
2. Enjoy the little things.
Dogs don’t ask for much, and they derive so much pleasure from the small things -- like a nice day or a squeaky ball. We can learn from that and choose to appreciate the small things that make life great.
3. Get messy.
Dogs know the importance of a good romp in the mud or a nice run in the rain. Staying clean and proper is nice but sometimes it’s vital to throw your inhibitions to the wind and do something crazy.
4. Live in the present.
Dogs live for today and that is part of what makes them so great. They live in the moment and look forward to every new beginning. The future is uncertain so the best time to live is now.
5. Forget the past.
Dogs don’t hold grudges, they forgive and forget. It’s unhealthy to hold onto the past and you have to know when to let go. There is no changing the past, and dogs remind us to look towards the future and for the things that are to come.
6. Love freely and unconditionally.
Dogs show you that if you love someone, you should let them know. They are open and sincere with their love, which is one of the reasons they are so amazing. They don’t care about if you are cranky or even if you’ve just scolded them. They will always come back with a kiss and a tail wag.
7. Stay curious.
Dogs' curiosity can often times get them into trouble, but that is far superior to living a completely apathetic life. They never stop wondering about what’s around the corner or down the street, just as we should never stop searching for things that excite and enthuse us.
8. Love yourself.
Dogs are not concerned with physical appearances. They don’t care what they look like, let alone what you look like. It doesn’t matter to them if you are tall or short, thin or thick, or black or white. They look past the physical and love you for your character and what’s on the inside.
9. Approach life with a positive attitude.
Dogs wake up excited about what the day will bring. It’s imperative that you choose to look at the glass half-full and have an optimistic outlook on life.
10. Be loyal and reliable.
Without fail, dogs are always excited to see you and love you no matter what. When you get home from a long day, they will be the first to greet you. They know when something is wrong, and will stand dutifully by your side to make you feel better. Dogs cherish the good times and have no problem acting goofy and silly with you.
Dogs become essential members of our families for these very reasons. A relationship with a dog is truly a special one. I am constantly astounded by how much love I can have for an animal. They help us stay grounded and to know what is truly important in this life.
