10 Life Lessons From "Downton Abbey"
hypable.com

1. Friendships are an essential part of life.

After falling ill with Bronchitis, the prideful Violet Crawley has no one but her friend Isobel to keep her company and nurse her back to health, proving that even the most independent of individuals occasionally need a helping hand. Though their friendship is one of snappy remarks and continuous competition, Violet cannot bare the thought of life without Isobel.

2. We are all equal, no matter our social class or financial status.

Whether it's a Lady or chauffeur, all members of Downton face trials and tribulations, have dreams and ambitions, and are on their own journeys to achieving happiness and contentedness in their lives. We are all human.

3. Life is precious.

"Downton Abbey" showcases the harsh fact that life is never black and white. Sometimes joyful moments are accompanied by tragic ones. Life can drastically change on a dime and we must learn to live every moment to the fullest.

4. Learn about the world around you.

Sibyl took the time to learn that there was more to life outside of Downton and the upper class. She involved herself in politics and ventured into new perspectives. The decision changed her life and made all the difference. (They're so cute!)

5. Everyone is fighting a battle.

Every person you encounter has a history and is dealing with separate, personal issues. Never compare your inner world with his or her outer world, because everyone crafts a poker face.

6. Take the high road.

When Edith finally receives word of Michael Gregson's death, Mary refuses to provide any sympathy. When her insensitive remarks become too much for Edith at dinner, Violet scolds Mary for her callous demeanor. The vicious circle of revenge has to end sometime, and you might as well be the bigger one and stop it.

7. The future can and will surprise you.

Matthew and Mary Crawley could not have been more at odds when they first met. But what was once a continuous clash of personalities would unexpectedly turn into a passionate, loving relationship. The power couple proves that even the most unlikely of individuals may one day become essential players in our lives.

8. Change is an important part of life.

One of my favorite lines from the series comes from a scene between Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes, who struggles with the decision to pass up a marriage proposal from an old lover. Though the opportunity had always sounded so attractive in the past, she can't help but regretfully feel she is different now, to which Mr. Carson replies, "What would be the point of living if we didn't let life change us?"

9. Don’t give up.

No matter the obstacles you face, never be a defeatist. Failure to do so, as the Dowager proclaims, is so middle class.

10. Family love is eternal.

The residents of Downton have faced scandal, crime, death, and every other form of challenge imaginable to threaten their bond and community. Yet the Crawley family and their house staff have stood proudly with one another, continuing to be at each other's aid. Their story is proof that familial love is unconditional and one of our greatest possessions. (Season 6 needs to come faster, please.)

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
