10 Lessons I Learned From My Dog

“I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me, they are the role model for being alive.” -- Gilda Radner

10 Lessons I Learned From My Dog
Kimball Stock

My dog may not be the brightest, but through her whole life she taught me the most valuable lessons for the rest of my own.

1. Don't lose your excitement for the little things

Just the word “walk” will have my dog running around the house and shaking her tail like a lunatic. I've also never seen anyone as excited to receive a tennis ball in my whole life. Get excited about the simple things and share your excitement with everyone around.

2. Love Unconditionally

My dog never stops showing her love for our family, whether it's one too many kisses or an overexcited greeting when we come home. In this way, she taught me to not hold anything back when you're showing your loved ones that you care.

3. Never Give Up

Some things seem impossible for dogs, such as chasing their tail, or fetching a ball after it's been thrown over the fence. Personally, I've seen my dog accidentally fall into a lake trying to get the ball and, even more impressively, create a hole in the fence for herself to climb out and get it. Just like her, no matter how hard the struggle, like a dog, try, try, try and try some more.

4. Always make time for naps

Life is stressful, even for a dog. Give yourself a break once and awhile for a must needed nap. I bet your dog would be up for it.

5. Offer a helping hand

My dog, like many others, always seems ready to lick the food that dropped on the floor or clean the plates sitting in the dishwasher. Try and help others without complaint.

6. Show thanks

I find the more anyone feeds my dog or gives her treats, the more love she shows them. By her example, always give your thanks, maybe not in a slobbery kiss, but let people know you appreciate all they've done for you.

7. Make yourself be heard

There's nothing more annoying than constant barking, but, as owners, we don't just ignore our dogs when they bark. Most of the time we give them what they want. Like my dog, step up and let your voice be heard whether its a great idea or helpful advice, and don't stop speaking until you're heard.

8. Be loyal and trust others

There's not a more faithful creature on this earth than that of dog. Trust those who are good to you and be loyal to them as much as your dog trusts you.

9. Don't be afraid to remind your loved ones just how much you love them

My dog’s favorite activity during the day is visiting each member of the family and giving a single lick on the leg or foot before leaving. I know she's just checking up on us and leaving a kiss behind. Go ahead text your mom, dad, or grandparent and randomly remind them you love them. I know your dog would want you too.

10. They're always family.

Whether it's the dogs we've lost, dogs we may lose, or dogs we have in our homes right now, they will always be family in our hearts. We hold the lessons and the memories they gave and give us forever. So thank you to my dog and all the dogs for teaching us how to be better people.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
