I have 4 favorite characters in The Walking Dead. Unfortunately, one of my favorite characters is no longer with the show. He moved on to do movies. One my favorite characters is Daryl Dixon played by Norman Reedus. The second favorite character is Merle Dixon played by Michael Rooker. The third favorite character is Carl Grimes played by Chandler Riggs. And my final favorite character is Rick Grimes played by Andrew Lincoln. Now, Daryl and Merle are brothers in the show. Originally in the comic book, Daryl was not a character in the comic book. After he did an audition, the director and creator of the show decided to make a character for Norman. Carl and Rick are father and son in the show and you can feel the compassion between them as father and son. I am going to talk about these characters on an individual level and how they have progressed. In this article, I am going to talk about why I like Daryl Dixon. What made Daryl Dixon into the hardened man that he is? These are the ten items that made him into who he is.
His father. It is known among the Walking Dead fan base that Daryl was beaten by his father as evident by his scars on his back.
His childhood. In season 2, Daryl talks about how when he was 9 he ran away from home. He said that no one realized that he was gone. He was lost in the woods for a week while his father was out on a bender with some waitress. And his brother was serving a stent in Juvenile hall.
His brother. Now, his brother’s name is Merle. It was known that Merle was a drug dealer to have spending money. This caused a lot of tension between Daryl and Merle.
Losing his mother. There is a rumor going in the Walking Dead fan base that Daryl’s mother was killed in a house fire.
Losing his brother. In season one, Merle goes with the group to Atlanta to get supplies. Merle was chained to the roof by Rick. Then left there by T-dog. Merle ended up cutting off his hand to get away from walkers. Which Daryl finds. Later on, Merle and Daryl reunite just for Merle to be killed later on. The most heart breaking thing was when Daryl had to kill the Walker form of Merle.
Losing Sophia. This was more about seeing how heartbroken Sophia’s mother Carol was. Daryl has a soft spot for Carol. He lets his hardened self-image drop when he’s with Carol. When they find the walker version of Sophia, Daryl pulls Carol close as she screams and cries because her baby is dead.
Losing Beth. While Daryl was on the Greene’s farm with the group of survivors, he struck up a friendship with Beth Greene. The youngest of the Greene sisters. Beth was with Daryl through the hardest times for him. In Season 5, Beth is captured and taken to a hospital. Later in the season, we see a scene of Daryl carrying out her lifeless body.
Being in situations that make him uncomfortable. After Losing Beth, he no longer had that one person to turn to. When the group found Alexandria, Daryl had to adjust to being somewhere that was kind of safe for him to be. But this made him quite uncomfortable.
Being shot in the shoulder. In season 6 in the 15th episode Daryl is shot in the shoulder. Now, the way the episode ended, it made everyone believe that he was actually shot in the head or the neck. Because the last thing that is seen is the blood splattering on the camera.
Possibly meeting his end at the end of Lucille. At the end of season 6, we are introduced to Neagan and his barbwire wrapped bat named Lucille. At the end of the episode, Neagan has the survivors in a line and he’s doing a twisted “eenie meenie minny mo”. The scene shows him bouncing around. So you do not know who is going to be killed by Lucille.
