10 Helpful Tips For College Move In Day

It's that time of the year again. For students who are starting up college, move in day is a fun, exciting and sometimes stressful process. For those who have gone through move in day can say that it is smooth sailing, but for others who are new, it can be new and challenging. Here are 10 tips for a helpful move in day:

Connect with your roommate prior to move in day

Usually housing assignments become available to students one month prior to move in day. This will include the email address of the student who will be your roommate. This is a perfect time to coordinate who is bringing what such as a microwave, or a mini fridge.

Document your new place with photos and vlogs

I recently moved into a new on campus apartment for an on-campus jobs. Since college only happens once, make the most of it by documenting your experiences.

Make sure to plan what days to pack

Avoid packing everything all at once to avoid burnout. Instead, pack your items in small chunks of time daily. This will give you more time to prepare instead of cramming it all at once.

Always plan to bring less to your dorm

College dorms are small, and you do not have to bring your entire life with you to the dorm. Save the extra jackets, photos, furniture, and other trinkets at home.

Know where to unload and unpack

Always be alert and know where to go. Remember that many other university students are moving on the same exact day as you are. Avoid stress and confusion with knowing where to go.

Resources will be there on move in to assist you

Residential advisors and other staff will bring you carts and facilitate move in. They will be happy to see your face and bring you the big welcome.

Do bring your best attitude on move in day

Come in with a fresh positive mind. It will rub off on everyone else, and make sure to not be the negative resident in the hall.

Don't judge a roommate on the items they have off the bat

If you see the items your roommate brings, don't judge at first. You have not known who they are yet, and it isn't a good thing to do.

Be sure to thank your parents for the help

They will miss you, and may get emotional. Do your best to acknowledge that, and thank them for their time helping you move in.

Be ready to have fun and live it up in your dorm

The next academic year will be very different, and with college just ahead, enjoy your dorm and be sure to make new friends on the floor.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
