HALLOWEEN IS FINALLY HERE! It’s finally the height of the spooky season, one of the best days of the year, and it’s on a Monday… What do you do when Halloween is on a Monday, you’re too old to trick-or-treat, and there are no Halloween parties happening? Watch movies of course! But not just any movies – you have to watch the spookiest scary movies and the silliest not-so-scary movies. So here’s a list of the top ten Halloween movies (don’t worry, they’re not all scary).
1. Halloweentown
Honestly, if you haven’t seen Halloweentown, what are you doing with your life? This Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM for you newbies) is one of the best, most iconic movies that has ever been on television. Okay, maybe not, but it’s still incredible. An alternate world with a town that basically celebrates Halloween all year long is my cup of tea and it should be yours too!
2. Hocus Pocus
This movie used to scare me when I was little, but these days, it’s one of my favorite Halloween movies. Some parts get a little spooky what with the singing that lures children into the woods to be eaten (thanks Sarah Jessica Parker), but overall it’s a funny, heartwarming movie with a pretty cute cat. If that cat part doesn’t sell the movie for you, I don’t know how else to get you to watch it. Just do it!!
3. The Addams Family Values
If you’re a fan of The Addams Family show, you will love this movie. It has different actors, but each of the portrays their characters perfectly. And it’s the Addams Family so you can’t really mess that up.
4. The Nightmare Before Christmas
JACK SKELLINGTON. He is the main reason to watch the movie, but the songs and visuals in the movie are honestly incredible. And thanks to Tim Burton, we have another incredible Halloween classic.
5. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
This movie isn’t all that scary as it is creepy. It’s definitely the type of movie that will make your heart skip a few beats (occasionally), but it’s also kind of funny to watch these people wander through the woods with no clue what’s happening. Because honestly if I were to wander through the woods for days on end, I would expect some creepy stuff to happen, but these guys are totally shocked. I don’t know maybe it’s just my weird sense of humor.
6. Scream
This was the very first scary movie I ever watched, and I remember being scared out of my mind. Though these days, if I watched this movie, I would probably fall asleep. Not because it’s not a thriller (because it definitely is), but because I already know what happens. This is one of those incredible thrillers that will keep you on your toes throughout the whole movie, and that is hard to find these days. So if you watch this movie on Halloween, savor the moment and be ready to be thrilled.
7. Insidious
This movie… How do I even describe it? It’s such a good movie because it incorporates so many different aspects of horror. You have the thrill of not knowing what is going to happen, you have the pop ups that make you jump out of your seat, and then you have a ghost dimension full of creepy ghosts and horrible demons. This movie is a wild ride, but it’s worth the watch.
8. Sinister
This movie is just as scary as Insidious, but for a totally different reason. The whole thing is super creepy and somewhat gory (even I, a horror movie superfan, had to cover her eyes during some parts). It may be frightening and make you scared about letting someone else make your coffee (watch the movie and you’ll know what I mean), but it’s so well put together and it’s an incredible movie to watch on Halloween.
9. The Conjuring
Based on a “true story,” this movie will give you the super heebie-jeebies. This ghost story seems so real, and could possibly be, since the family that it’s based upon actually claimed that the events portrayed happened. Everything about this movie makes it so great. From the effects to the actors and actresses, this movie pulls out all the stops to make it incredible.
10. The Paranormal Activity Series (1 through 3)
I guess technically this pushes the list to 12, but the first three of this series are incredible. Going backward from the present (movie one) to the beginning (movie three), these movies follow how a demon follows two sisters all throughout their lives. It’s incredibly convoluted, but it’s amazing. Everything about these movies keeps you on your toes, and I can guarantee that you won’t be able to walk through your house in the dark for at least a couple of days. These are a must watch during this season of the spook.
There you have it, my list of the top ten movies to watch on Halloween, in order from least to most scary (for the scaredy cats out there). You have to watch at least one of these movies on Halloween in order to get the whole holiday experience.
