think that 2016 is one of the worst years yet? here are some great things in pop culture that happened this year that 2016 should be remembered for.

10 Good Things that Happened in 2016

The internet seems obsessed with memes and statements about how 2016 has been a horrible year. And there is no doubt that a lot of bad things have happened in 2016, whether it is celebrity deaths, war and massacres, or disappointment in a presidential election. But there were also a lot of good things that happened in 2016 that shouldn't be forgotten either. And in reality, compared to history 2016 was not so bad as other years. It also could have been the best year for many people who graduated, got married, engaged, or had children this year. So here are a few highlights from the year...

1. Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his Oscar

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F12%2F21%2F6361794753591247932063350204_giphy.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=930&h=896e66a28597b87e341cf3522e13b02140ec5959aa2a09da4755cbb71d23a71c&size=980x&c=3570010372 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F12%252F21%252F6361794753591247932063350204_giphy.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D930%26h%3D896e66a28597b87e341cf3522e13b02140ec5959aa2a09da4755cbb71d23a71c%26size%3D980x%26c%3D3570010372%22%7D" expand=1]

After years of internet memes and Oscar snubs, the famous and talented actor finally won an Academy award for his role in The Revenant. 2016 will forever be known as the year he finally got his Oscar, which he probably should have gotten at least ten years ago. But hey, better late than never.

2. "Lemonade" and the Formation tour

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F12%2F21%2F636179498332406489-1399570058_giphy%2520%283%29.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=478&h=832b854bd4c97bc527ff19b7641d03712ef05e0e9ab8246a63128a2972b07d93&size=980x&c=4132387103 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F12%252F21%252F636179498332406489-1399570058_giphy%252520%25283%2529.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D478%26h%3D832b854bd4c97bc527ff19b7641d03712ef05e0e9ab8246a63128a2972b07d93%26size%3D980x%26c%3D4132387103%22%7D" expand=1]

Beyoncé's visual album and the music itself is one of the best albums to come out this year, and is one of her best yet. Not only did she release it all at once, she also went on tour this summer, and blew away the Superbowl halftime show even though she wasn't the headliner. The tour was one of the best concerts I have ever been to, and I could listen to "Lemonade" on repeat all day.

3. The Cleveland Cavaliers ended an 52 year drought

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F12%2F21%2F636179480825820360-499140648_ap-cavaliers-parade.jpg%3Fw%3D1000%26h%3D600%26crop%3D1&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=924&h=98be3ef9df51ec3007c389fcc741c8c09658e81635e497798466d626f7f9f539&size=980x&c=2152722418 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F12%252F21%252F636179480825820360-499140648_ap-cavaliers-parade.jpg%253Fw%253D1000%2526h%253D600%2526crop%253D1%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D924%26h%3D98be3ef9df51ec3007c389fcc741c8c09658e81635e497798466d626f7f9f539%26size%3D980x%26c%3D2152722418%22%7D" expand=1 original_size="1x1"]

As a Clevelander, this was one of the most exciting events of the year. The entire city was in celebration for the majority of the summer, as everyone finally could call Cleveland the home to a championship major league sports team again after 52 years. The parade itself was insane, but will probably be one of my favorite memories of Cleveland and from the year 2016.

4. "Hamilton" took the world by storm

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F12%2F21%2F636179490707112376-149958444_giphy%2520%282%29.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=493&h=52ff8c8898375cc43ec2bfa015a392931bfff4e4e29c089e283dbcbe3e52cecf&size=980x&c=4193386577 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F12%252F21%252F636179490707112376-149958444_giphy%252520%25282%2529.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D493%26h%3D52ff8c8898375cc43ec2bfa015a392931bfff4e4e29c089e283dbcbe3e52cecf%26size%3D980x%26c%3D4193386577%22%7D" expand=1]

"Hamilton" was already popular at the beginning of the year, but 2016 was when it became a cultural phenomenon. It won 11 Tony awards and expanded into new cities, and Lin Manuel Miranda was everywhere. The mixtape also dropped within the last month with some awesome celebrity takes on the soundtrack 2017 looks to be an even more exciting year for the musical as it will begin its tour and expand its audiences even further.

5. Simone Biles and the 2016 Rio Olympics

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F12%2F22%2F636180245318145503-1998002024_tumblr_obo3ciTSJW1tl41jto1_400.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=991&h=7f2f231aa02cb8f9ee66136d385f4a765ef5c8be2b43db7ee129945f11fe993a&size=980x&c=1458034189 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F12%252F22%252F636180245318145503-1998002024_tumblr_obo3ciTSJW1tl41jto1_400.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D991%26h%3D7f2f231aa02cb8f9ee66136d385f4a765ef5c8be2b43db7ee129945f11fe993a%26size%3D980x%26c%3D1458034189%22%7D" expand=1]

The Olympics are always a fun event to watch, but Simone Biles shined this year, sweeping the gymnastics competition with five medals and also the honor of carrying the USA flag at the closing ceremonies. She is arguably one of the break out stars of the Rio competition.

6. The resurgence of Harry Potter

This was the year for harry potter fans, who got a double dose of new harry potter additions to the universe, including the play The Cursed Child and the movie Fantastic Beasts. In addition, it was announced that there would be 4 sequels to Fantastic Beasts, giving fans something to look forward to after 5 years of waiting between the last Harry Potter movie and this year of harry potter splurges.

8. Netflix finally added offline downloads

Finally we can download shows from Neftlix to watch when there is no internet, something I have been wanting for years. Now if you have a long car ride or plane trip where the internet is spotty or non-existent, you can still pass the time binge watching your favorite shows.

9. "Rouge One: A Star Wars Story"

A highly anticipated film and the first of Disney's planned spinoff Star Wars movies turned out to be an interesting and successful film that took a darker look at the universe. This highly anticipated movie was hyped as a heist film, and it delivered on that and even more, while at the same time keeping fans' interest in Star Wars high as they patiently wait for episode 8 to come up next holiday season.

10. General good events

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F12%2F22%2F636180299482452930-1393657590_giphy%2520%288%29.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=360&h=739af15b16c031a2dcd80d8cfb4493f857b814246bf23186262696c6401edd04&size=980x&c=1620323510 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F12%252F22%252F636180299482452930-1393657590_giphy%252520%25288%2529.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D360%26h%3D739af15b16c031a2dcd80d8cfb4493f857b814246bf23186262696c6401edd04%26size%3D980x%26c%3D1620323510%22%7D" expand=1]

Even though for some people this year might have been stressful and filled with worry, others had significant life events occur, like weddings, the birth of a child, graduations, and reunions that they will forever remember happening in 2016 and are special to them. The bad things that happened in this calendar year should not make these events any less special or make people feel worse about their big life events just because it occurred in the same year the Prince, David Bowie, and George Michael died.

So even though it seems like 2016 has been the worst year in recent history, there were plenty of good things that happened and that we should remember 2016 for rather than focusing on all the bad things. Here's to making 2017 an even better year that we can hopefully not look at so negatively as 2016 is viewed.

Is God Reckless?

Exploring the controversy behind the popular worship song "Reckless Love"

Is God Reckless?

First things first I do not agree with people getting so caught up in the specific theology of a song that they forget who they are singing the song to. I normally don't pay attention to negative things that people say about worship music, but the things that people were saying caught my attention. For example, that the song was not biblical and should not be sung in churches. Worship was created to glorify God, and not to argue over what kind of theology the artist used to write the song. I was not made aware of the controversy surrounding the popular song "Reckless Love" by Cory Asbury until about a week ago, but now that I am aware this is what I have concluded. The controversy surrounding the song is how the term reckless is used to describe God's love. This is the statement that Cory Asbury released after many people questioned his theology regarding his lyrics. I think that by trying to clarify what the song was saying he added to the confusion behind the controversy. This is what he had to say,
"Many have asked me for clarity on the phrase, "reckless love". Many have wondered why I'd use a "negative" word to describe God. I've taken some time to write out my thoughts here. I hope it brings answers to your questions. But more than that, I hope it brings you into an encounter with the wildness of His love. When I use the phrase, "the reckless love of God", I'm not saying that God Himself is reckless. I am, however, saying that the way He loves, is in many regards, quite so. What I mean is this: He is utterly unconcerned with the consequences of His actions with regards to His own safety, comfort, and well-being. His love isn't crafty or slick. It's not cunning or shrewd. In fact, all things considered, it's quite childlike, and might I even suggest, sometimes downright ridiculous. His love bankrupted heaven for you. His love doesn't consider Himself first. His love isn't selfish or self-serving. He doesn't wonder what He'll gain or lose by putting Himself out there. He simply gives Himself away on the off-chance that one of us might look back at Him and offer ourselves in return. His love leaves the ninety-nine to find the one every time."
Some people are arguing that song is biblical because it makes reference to the scripture from Matthew 28:12-14 and Luke 15. Both of these scriptures talk about the parable of the lost sheep and the shepherd. The shepherd symbolizes God and the lost sheep are people that do not have a relationship with God. On the other hand some people are arguing that using the term reckless, referring to God's character is heretical and not biblical. I found two articles that discuss the controversy about the song. The first article is called, "Reckless Love" By Cory Asbury - "Song Meaning, Review, and Worship Leading Tips." The writer of the article, Jake Gosselin argues that people are "Making a mountain out of a molehill" and that the argument is foolish. The second article, "God's Love is not Reckless, Contrary to What You Might Sing" by author Andrew Gabriel argues that using the term reckless is irresponsible and that you cannot separate Gods character traits from God himself. For example, saying that God's love is reckless could also be argued that God himself is reckless. Reckless is typically not a word that someone would use to describe God and his love for us. The term reckless is defined as (of a person or their actions) without thinking or caring about the consequences of an action. However, Cory Asbury is not talking about a person, he is talking about God's passionate and relentless pursuit of the lost. While I would not have chosen the word reckless, I understand what he was trying to communicate through the song. Down below I have linked two articles that might be helpful if you are interested in reading more about the controversy.
