A common complaint leveled against electronic dance music is that "it all sounds the same." And, if you're only listing to the handful of EDM songs that make it onto Top 40 radio, that's a (sadly) fair argument. As the genre has exploded into mainstream awareness and become commercially marketable, it has developed a sizable population of both fans and artists that support and produce commercially marketable pop-EDM. And like all pop music, it's rigidly formulaic. As with all forms of art, underneath the glittery, shallow surface there's a thriving underground of stunning innovation and creation. Presented in no particular order, here are our 10 favorite producers that operate outside the swarm of bottle service bros and hot Dutch DJs with blow-dried hair.
1. Lido
This fantastic Norwegian first shook up the scene a year ago with the phenomenal I Love You EP. Since then, he's gone on to remix the likes of BANKS, alt-J and Flight Facilities, and just released another stunning EP, Superspeed, with French producer Canblaster. Lido's sound defies genre definition: full of unique, interesting sound design and prodigious musicality. Even his live show flips the conventions of EDM on their heads; he incorporates live sample triggering, keyboard playing and even sings most of his songs live. His recent collaboration with Towkio and Chance the Rapper is blowing up right now, so we may see Lido break into mainstream awareness soon.
2. Flume
What do Lorde, Arcade Fire, Sam Smith and Disclosure all have in common? They've all had singles remix by the deft hand of Flume. Since the Sydney based producer emerged onto the dance scene with such instant classics as Sleepless and Holdin' On, he's gone on to collaborate with fellow countryman Chet Faker, form (and separate from) What So Not, and headline festivals all around the world. Throughout his entire catalogue, Flume has achieved something exceedingly rare, a perfect balance of style and substance, depth and levity, emotion and innovation. HIs recent work, like Some Minds, is unreal, and his live show and visuals are some of the best in the game right now.
3. Coyote Kisses
This LA-based duo have been turning heads since they released their Acid Wolfpack EP four years ago. Although their sound has gone through some serious periodic shifts; from the raw energy of Acid Wolfpack and Galactic Love Song, to the experimental grooves of the Thundercolor EP and Black Cat, all the way up to the bubbly-ness and brightness of recent efforts like Sunny Day. They have maintained a consistent tone and aesthetic throughout their career, and their production gets slicker with every track.
4. Zeds Dead
Taking their name from a line of dialogue in Pulp Fiction, Zeds Dead have always had a penchant for cool. And, whether producing dubstep or deep house, their tunes have always got cool in spades. Although fantastic sound designers, mixers and live performers, their true genius lies in their song writing and arraignments. Their songs are never predictable and always fascinating, and from their early releases with rapper Omar Linx to their Somewhere Else EP from last year, they've always broken convention and maintained an artistic vision.
5. The M Machine
For years, The M Machine have been doing what very few artists have successfully accomplished--making high-concept art both entertaining and accessible. Their first original release, the massive two-part concept album Metropolis Pts. I & II, was a sci-fi epic based on a silent film tom 1927. It also f*cking slays. Their remixes are brilliant, their singles are amazing and their most recent EP, all though not as conceptually ambitious as Metropolis, is still consistently incredible.
6. Lucas Nord
Swedish producer Lucas Nord has accomplished a lot more than his 4,300 Soundcloud followers would suggest: he's worked with such big names as John Dahlbäck, Rasmus Faber, Urban Cone and Tove Lo; Embrace Me part II was one of the best songs of 2013; and his debut album Islands was easily among the top releases last year in any genre. Recently, the criminally underrated producer has shifted his sound away from the massive energy of songs like Run on Love and toward the more introspective, late-night-slow-jam grooviness of Voices and Nothing Left, although he still maintains the top-notch production chops and musicality he has throughout his career.
7. Elénne
This enigmatic producer from Stuttgart, Germany makes some of the most interesting and unique glitchy future house in the scene right now. Whether it's on funky tunes like the delightfully choppy and kinetic Abacus and Ruthless Bloom to the emotive melodies of Labor of Love, Elénne has always had a talent for creating tunes that both gives dance floors the chills and producers nerdgasms.
8. Porter Robinson
Arguably the least "underground" artist on this list, Porter Robinson was one of the most exciting producers in the world before he had even graduated high school. Three years ago he released the thrillingly fun Spitfire EP on Skrillex's then up-and-coming label OWSLA, and looked set to join his mentor as the king of hard-hitting, impeccably produced electro-house and dubstep. But then he released Language, a breathtaking and heart wrenching prog-house masterpiece, and took everyone by surprised. Fast forward to the present and Worlds, arguably one of the best and most important albums of 2014 and it's subsequent live tour, have completely changed the game for albums, songwriting, visuals, and performance.
9. ALESIA
If you need some thundering bass in your life to fill the time until Nero's next album, then look no further than Parisian duo ALESIA. These guys have some of the most unusual sound design around and their take-no-prisoners approach to song writing and live shows will leave you with lose teeth and shaky knees. Their MIA Remix is superb, the earth-shaking Featuring Nömak recalls the best of Noisia and their most recent EP was one of the best OWSLA releases all year.
10.Cashmere Cat
This Norwegian tastemaker may be the most famous DJ you've never heard of. He's played with Diplo, remixed Lana Del Rey, 2 Chainz and Miguel, and produced for big stars like Ariana Grande and Ludacris. He has a totally unique sound that is at once instantly recognizable but always fluid and fresh. His remix of Ryn Weaver's Octahate is one of the best tracks of 2015 so far, his last EP was mind-blowing, and he's only just getting started.
Although these 10 artists are, in our opinion, great examples of truly gifted and influential electronic musicians, the EDM scene is absolutely enormous. Look into the scene for yourself, find and support artists you love, and remember to always, always listen to more than what's on the radio.
