In honor of International Cat Day (August 8, 2016) all the cat ladies (and cat men) of the world should be well-informed with the most important and ever so random cat facts. Whether being a cat lady surrounded by many of them sounds like a dream come true for you, or maybe you just have that one feline that you adore so very much, everyone should appreciate and love these cute little creatures on International Cat Day.
1. Cats Sleep Their Lives Away
Oh how I dream of being a cat. Well, not really dream, because as a college student I never sleep. Cats on the other hand sleep about two-thirds, or approximately 70% of their lives away. Not a bad way to live if I say so myself.
2. There Is An International and National Cat Day
National Cat Day promotes cat adoption and is supposedly celebrated annually on October 29th while International Cat Day is on August 8th. But let's be honest, when you're a cat lover every day is cat day and when you're a cat, well, every day is still cat day.
3. Cat For President 2016
Life would be just so much easier if a cat just ran our country. Well that's what some residents said about their town in Alaska. Mayor Stubbs is a 16-year-old cat who has been the mayor of the small town of Talkeetna Alaska for about 15 years. Not too "tabby" if you ask me. Stubbs 2016 anyone? (Follow Mayor Stubbs on Twitter: @MayorStubbs)
4. Give Them The Gold
A study explains that a typical house cat is actually faster than Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. Personally, I wouldn't mind watching the Olympics cat version.
5. One Small Step For Man, One Giant Leap For Cats
Meet Felicette: also known as "Astrocat." Felicette was a French cat and the only cat who went into space and survived the trip. And yes Felicette did definitely sign "pawtographs" after returning.
6. Cats vs. Cucumbers
If you haven't seen the many videos already, cats and cucumbers just don't get along. A cucumber to a cat is like a terrifying creepy clown to a human. Whether it's their curiosity or many the thought of it being a predator, a cucumber is certainly not a cats favorite vegetable.
7. Our 16th President Was a Cat Lover
Abraham Lincoln loved his cats. In fact, he kept 4 of them in the White House. When asked if her husband had a hobby, Mary Todd Lincoln replied, “cats.”Same President Lincoln...same.
8. Started From The Bottom Now We Here
Want to feel bad about yourself? Meet Tommaso: also known as casually the richest cat in the world. Tommaso was once homeless but now is living in luxury, but I mean he really didn't work for it. He inherited a $13 million fortune from his owner, Maria Assunta, a wealthy widow who passed away and decided the cat was the one to give it to. Uh, yeah hi Tommaso....want to be friends?
9. Uh, Yes You Can Toilet Train a Cat
The more you know I guess. Yes, cats actually have the skillset to learn how to use the toilet. Um, just make sure you always knock? In case you have nothing better to do, why not toilet train your cat?
10. Cat Terminology
In case you were wondering, a group of kittens is called a "kindle." However, if you are talking about a group of adult cats they are called a "clowder." So I guess my dream in life is to have a kindle of kittens? That makes it sound even cuter.
So there you have it cat lovers. The fun facts about cats just never stop. And in case you want to fill your social media accounts with more cuteness (or grumpiness) feel free to follow @RealGrumpyCat on Twitter or @TheOfficialGrumpyCat on Facebook.
