I have recently returned from studying abroad in Sevilla, Spain for six weeks, one of the most enriching experiences of my life. Prior to departing to Sevilla, I did minimal research on what to do, where to go, and what to see. But after living in this amazing city for some time, I have come up with a compilation of truly unique things about Spain!
1. Food.
Tapas, tapas, tapas! Spaniards take their food very seriously and the different flavors and textures are what makes Spanish food so yummy. Whether you order paella, Tortilla de España, or croquettes, it’s bound to be delicious and locally made. But be warned, if you go to a restaurant for dinner before 9 p.m., it’s going to be completely empty.
2. Location.
Spain is in a great location in Europe. With the Atlantic below it and the Mediterranean on the East side there is a lot of beach tourism. Also, it’s only a few hour plane ride to Italy and other European countries.
3. Weather.
Yes, it’s hot in Spain. But unlike here in North Carolina, there is zero percent humidity. So while it may be 100 degrees Fahrenheit, it doesn’t remotely feel as hot.
4. Culture.
Nothing beats the nice southern hospitality of people living in Sevilla. Spaniards are so proud of their country and all that it entails so they love teaching travelers about Spanish history, food, and culture.
5. Siestas.
If you visited Spain and didn’t take a siesta, did you really visit Spain?
6. Cathedrals.
Since Spain is predominately Catholic there is a cathedral in every Spanish city. Cathedrals are gorgeous and have so much history behind them, it’s important to really listen and admire the cathedrals because there aren’t places similar to them in the U.S.
7. Landscapes.
Spain landscapes are gorgeous, there’s nothing quite like them. Take as many pictures as possible, even though the picture won’t do it justice.
8. Sangria.
Nothing is better than after a long day, laying back at your favorite local tapas restaurant and drinking a fresh glass of Sangria. Spain is famous for delicious Sangria so take advantage of it, because it’s not the same anywhere else.
9. Lifestyle.
Spaniards really focus on living life and are very family oriented. In Sevilla, we ate lunch and dinner with our whole Spanish family every day and this is very common in Spain. Work hours are very flexible and family time is a must.
10. Futbol!
If you are in Spain you must go to a futbol match. No matter if they’re the worst team in the league, all fans cheer and chant the whole game. They have so much passion for the team and take pride in whatever the ending score is.
