Whether you’re a student at Washington & Lee University, or just visiting Lexington, Virginia, these 10 foods should all be on your list of things to try. Forget your meal plan. Who cares if it’ll make you poor? These foods are all worth it -- I’m speaking from experience here. Some of them aren’t the healthiest options… but hey, I’ll eat 10 Phoenix salads a week or a Bistro salad with salmon every day if I have to. I know the meatloaf in D-hall is hard to beat… but try any of these 10 things and you might find that it’s possible.
1. Chicken Pad Thai from Napa Thai
The décor of this restaurant could really use some work, and the 99 percent of the words on the menu might be spelled wrong but these people make some good pad thai.
2. Bistro salad with salmon
So good. If you like salmon and you like lettuce then I’m betting you’ll like this salad. Even if you don’t like salmon and you don’t like lettuce, you’ll like it. So there. I would say 90 percent of the female population at W&L could vouch for this (sweeping generalization, I realize… but I’m making a point here).
3. Tap’s burger
So I’ve actually never had it… but ask anyone and they’ll tell you it’s one of the best burgers they’ve ever had.
4. Fried chicken from Kenney’s
It comes with the weirdest looking biscuit I’ve ever seen but the fried chicken at this little hole-in-the-wall is delicious and definitely not nutritious.
5. Pulled pork with mac n’ cheese, fries and cornbread from Foothill Mama’s
They have a ton of different barbecue sauces to choose from and none of them will fail you. The cornbread comes with this magical cinnamon butter that I’m pretty sure was sent from heaven.
6. Pancakes from Kind Roots
They’re gluten-free and one of the best things I’ve eaten ever. Period. I’m not trying to hate on the gluten-free population and its food, but 99 percent of the time it’s terrible. Well, that is not the case with these pancakes. Kind Roots is attached to the YMCA too so you get to sit and watch people work out while you stuff your face with syrupy goodness, what's better than that?
7. Oreo ice cream from Sweet Things
I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a different flavor. I’m sure they’re all delicious but I can never ever bring myself to get something different because the Oreo is unreal.
8. Sandwiches from Pronto
The bread might be the best part, but I’ve tried every kind and they’re all amazing.
9. Phoenix salad from (what used to be) Healthy Foods Coop
If you’re less inclined to eating healthy stuff then this might not be for you but if you are… then it should definitely be at the top of your list.
10. Cinnamon sugar doughnuts from Pure Eats
No words.
