10 Bands To Check Out!
Lauren Hernandez

I have recommended 10 bands from the United States, Canada, and Australia that I believe any music lover would love! These bands are definitely making their names known in the music industry right now. Here is a list of artists I think you should check out!

Peace

Peace is an English indie rock band from Worcester, England. The band consists of four members including brothers Harry Koisser and Sam Koisser. Harry sings while Sam plays the bass. Peace was originally signed to Columbia Records but now is in partnership with the independent label, Ignition Records.

The band's first EP known as Delicious was released in 2012 and it consists of four songs including "California Daze" and "Bloodshake," which gave the band much recognition. Peace later released their first album in 2013 named In Love.In Love consists of 16 songs and three live tracks!

Later in 2015, the band released their sophomore album, Happy People, an 18 track album. Happy People gave the band a lot more recognition in the United Kingdom!

On December 8, 2017, Peace released their first single from their new record label. The single is titled "From Under Liquid Glass" and it was released in support of MQ Mental Health! Peace is currently working on their new album, Kindness Is The New Rock And Roll.

Peace is definitely a band to check out and I would recommend songs like "Lost On Me," "Wraith," and "I'm a Girl."

The Jungle Giants

The Jungle Giants are a five-piece band from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia! The Jungle Giants formed during university as they were all in opposing bands in high school. The band's lead singer, Sam Hales spent 6 months working two jobs to fund their first self-titled EP released in 2011.

The band later released another EP named She's a Riot in 2012. The EP's success led the band's tours with Two Door Cinema Club, The Vaccines, and Last Dinosaurs'.

The band's first album, Learn to Exist was released independently in August 2013. The Jungle Giants second album, Speakerzoid was released in 2015 and is an album to check out. Tracks like "Devil's Play," "What Do You Think," and "Together We Can Work" are outstanding! The band definitely has a unique sound.

The Jungle Giants recently released their third studio album, Quiet Ferocity. Quiet Ferocity consists of 10 songs and has a very different sound than the previous two albums!

Pale Waves

Pale Waves are an English indie pop band from Manchester, United Kingdom. Lead singer, Heather Baron-Gracie met drummer, Ciar Doran while attending University in Machester.

Pale Waves signed to Dirty Hit Records and have been frequently produced and influenced by The 1975! The 1975 took Pale Waves on their tour throughout Europe and North America in 2017, where the band gained tons of exposure!

Pale Waves have released five singles, four of which are on their EP, ALL THE THINGS I NEVER SAID. The band announced earlier this year that they will be recording and releasing their debut album in the summer of 2018.

Singer, Heather Baron-Gracie has stated that she believes the band's style is very 80s influenced, "I love a lot of ‘80s artists like Prince and Madonna. 'Purple Rain' is one of my favorite songs of all time. But I love The Cure. I love songs that give you melodies that you can sing at any time, but within those melodies, there are things that break your heart."

Pale Waves recently won NME's 2018 Under the Rader Award. With the band's growing success and the recent release of their new single "The Tide," the band will be touring throughout Europe and North America as headliners! I would recommend listening to "New Year's Eve" and "There's a Honey."

RAT BOY

Jordan Cardy from Chelmsford, Essex, England was inspired to make a SoundCloud after being hired and fired by Wetherspoons. Cardy released his first set of tracks known as The Mixtape on SoundCloud and received a lot of praise for his work. After the making of The Mixtape, Cardy sent out his EP to many record labels and was finally noticed by Parlophone Records, where the band signed.

Cardy and his band rose to fame in 2016 after winning an NME Award for Best New Artist. RAT BOY later released their debut album, SCUM in the summer of 2017. The album did very well even earning the band a chance to tour with Liam Gallagher on his 2017 UK tour.

The band's style can most frequently be recognized as a mix of indie rock and hip-hop. The Clash and The Beastie Boys are two big influences of the band. I would recommend listening to their music as the band is fun and produces some really great songs that sound very different than anything released right now! I recommend "REVOLUTION," "SPORTSWEAR," and "SIGN ON."

Teenage Wrist

Teenage Wrist is the side project of Marshall Gallagher of Swing Hero and Kamtin Karimi Mohager of The Chain Gang of 1974. The band is releasing their debut album Chrome Neon Jesus on March 9, 2018.

Teenage Wrist has an awesome and underrated new sound! Their sound is alternative rock influenced and is every rock fans dream. You can check out their music by listening to their EP Dazed. The band is even better live and is very humble and energetic! Some songs to check out are "Afterglow," "Dweeb," and "Outside of Love."

I also recommend checking out The Chain Gang of 1974! The Chain Gang of 1974 has three studio albums named Wayward Fire, Daydream Forever, and Felt. Felt was released on March 26, 2017, and is Mohager's newest album. "Teenagers," "You," and "Godless Girl" are songs you must listen to!

The Hunna

The Hunna are a four piece English rock band from Hertfordshire, England. The band consists of singer, Ryan Potter most commonly known as Tino or Valentino, guitar player, Daniel Dorney, bass player, Jermaine Angin, and drummer, Jack Metcalfe.

Daniel and Tino met while attending the same college, while Daniel and Jermaine had known each other for years. Once the band met Jack, they formed their band, The Hunna.

The Hunna released their debut album 100 in the summer of 2016 and are currently working on their new album Dare. The band is touring in the United Kingdon and the United States with Coasts in support of their new album. On this tour, The Hunna is promoting some of their singles including "Dare," "Summer," and "Flickin' Your Hair."

I would recommend seeing the band live as they are a fantastic live band and very close to their fans! They interact with their fans and always keep them updated via social media especially Instagram live streams. I recommend listening to their new music along with songs from their debut album: "You & Me," "Be Young," and "Still Got Blood."

Smallpools

Smallpools is an indie pop and alternative dance band from Los Angeles, California. There are three members in the band: Lead singer and keyboardist, Sean Scanlon, guitarist, Kamerman, and drummer, Beau Kuther.

Smallpools began their music career with the release of their self-titled EP which consisted of four songs. The band later released their first album LOVETAP! in 2015.

Since the release of their first album, the band has toured with Two Door Cinema Club, Twenty One Pilots, Walk the Moon, and Neon Trees. Smallpools has also released a new EP titled THE SCIENCE OF LETTING GO. The five-track EP was released in the summer of 2017. Following the release of THE SCIENCE OF LETTING GO, the band toured with Vinyl Theatre and Misterwives throughout the United States.

I would recommend listening to "DJs and Porches," "American Love," and "Street Fight."

Circa Waves

Circa Waves are a four-piece English indie rock band from Liverpool, England. The band released their first EP, T-Shirt Weather in 2015. The EP has five tracks including their hit song "T-Shirt Weather."

Circa Waves later released their debut album, Young Chasers in 2015! They have toured with bands like The 1975 and The Libertines which gave the band more exposure in preparation for the release of their second album. Their second album, Different Creatures was released in 2017.

The release of Different Creatures gave Circa Waves more exposure in the United States as the band is very well known in the United Kingdom. Circa Waves was able to headline tours in both the United States and the United Kingdom after the release of their sophomore album. I would recommend seeing the band live as they are a great live band! I would also recommend listening to their songs "Fire That Burns," "Stuck in My Teeth," and "Stuck."

DMA'S

DMA'S is an Australian rock band from Sydney, Australia. The three-piece band is composed of Matt Mason, Tommy O'Dell, and Johnny Took. The band's sound has frequently been compared to Oasis.

DMA'S first release was their self-titled EP consisting of six songs. Since the release of their self-titled EP, DMA'S have released one album. Their debut album, Hills End was released in 2016 and reached number eight on the Australia charts. The band is working on their sophomore album, which is planned to be released in 2018 and titled For Now. Two songs from For Now have been released and are titled "Dawning" and "In the Air."

I recommend checking this band out if you are an Oasis fan or a fan of classic rock. I would recommend listening to "In the Moment," "Too Soon," and "Melbourne."

Tokyo Police Club

Tokyo Police Club is an indie rock band from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. The band formed in 2005 and later gained attention by playing some small shows throughout the Toronto area. Once the band gained more exposure they played festivals in the United Kingdom and the United States.

After the band toured with Weezer on their Troublemaker Tour they released their debut album, Elephant Shell. Their second full-length album Champ was released in 2010 and their song "Wait Up (Boots of Danger)" was nominated as best indie video of the year by MuchMusic.

In 2011 the band released 10 Days.10 Covers. 10 Years., an album where the band recorded and released a new cover song going in order from 2001 to 2010.

The bands most recent album, Forcefield was released in 2014. Tokyo Police Club has released two EPs since their last album and have toured frequently.

I would definitely recommend seeing the band live or listening to their songs "Your English Is Good" and "Toy Guns."

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
