10 Things Artists And Art Students Can Relate To

Art is a form of expression for most people, but for art students, it's a form of frustration sometimes.

As you may or may not know, I am one someone would call an artist. I create art for my own and other's enjoyment either physically or digitally. I've been recognized by my friends and family as the artist. People just correlate me with art as much as they correlate me with a sweater I seem to never take off.

As an artist and art student, I recognized a few experiences that happen constantly when you are an artist. I can honestly tell you most of, if not all, these experiences are things artists experience. So, why not make it a list.

Here is a list of 10 things, with illustrations drawn by me, artists and art students will probably, if not will, experience in their lifetime.

1. Carrying supplies

I don't know about other artists, but I always find myself in the predicament of having trouble carrying and storing all the art supplies I plan to use for the day. Maybe because I'm an art student, but I tend to struggle fitting all those supplies into my backpack and arms.

2. I want to art but not ART

This one is also for my fellow art students. Personally, I always feel like drawing something, but I don't want to draw something for my art class. It sounds stupid (and maybe it is), but overall, I want to draw just not my projects for art class. It's probably because I'm FORCED to draw something rather than me having a choice or maybe because the prompts I get for art class sometimes suck.

3. Models

If you ever plan to study art, expect to see a model one day. Models are...models. You just enter the studio and BAM- a naked man/woman in the center of the studio. Naked? Yup, naked.

I'm not against nudity- I think the human body is beautiful in all shapes and colors. But, it becomes a bit awkward for me when I just draw and stare at a naked stranger for like an hour or two. I often move and make faces when I draw too, so I become a bit anxious about what the models thinks of my weird drawing quirks whenever I do them.

4. Hands... just HANDS

Ask any artist about the hardest thing to draw. Hands are probably up there as their top or second choice. Hands are just weird squares with noodles. It can rotate a good 180 degrees and have so many positions. Tutorials and life examples can definitely help, but you somehow mess up that finger somehow.

5. "You got something on your face"

Art is messy. Compared to most of my art friends, I tend to be the most clean when working with a messy material such as charcoal and paint. Heck, one time I drew with charcoal with a white dress on, and I didn't even stain it. Yet, sometimes I'm just DEEP into my art, and I stop caring about what stains I'm causing.

6. Time consuming

Ironically, I'm not the most patient person in the world, and art is pretty time consuming. A piece can take up to WEEKS to finish. I can remember multiple sleepless nights just to make sure a piece was just right. I can also remember one of my art professors asking me if I took my time with a piece, and I just laughed and said, "Nah."

7. "Draw me like one of your french girls"

I can't even count how many times I've been asked to draw someone. I could just be doodling outside because I'm inspired or bored, and a random person, sometimes strangers, go up to me, compliment my piece, and ask if I can do a quick doodle of them.

Depending on my mood, I might do a quick sketch, rip it out of my sketchbook, and let my unwanted muse skip away happily. But, other times, I flat out chuck my sketchbook into my bag and flat out say, "No."

8. Appreciate a little further...

OK, what is up with people creepily shoving their face into my sketchbook? I can just be doodling a little salamander or something, and people just randomly dart their eyes to my sketchbook. Like, I get it. You wanna see my art, but sometimes I draw some really deep or dumb stuff I don't want others to see. Just, ask me and I'll be happy to show you some drawings I did.

9. Concerns

People think that art is not a profitable thing. Whenever I even mention the word art, people are ready to hit the questions cannon and ask what I plan to do with my art skills and art. I don't know? I'm just really passionate about drawing. Sure, just completely ignore the fact I've been offered a lot of commissions and opportunities because of my skills.

OK, I'll give them some slack. I know that the image of the broke artist is still out there. But for me, I put passion just a little over profit.

10. Passionate & creative

I LOVE doing art. I LOVE putting images from my brain on paper. Even with all these struggles I face almost on the daily, they won't stop me from keep doing art.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
