Well, August is almost over already. I thought it would be a good time to look back at the musical hits we have been blessed with so far in 2017. This year, like most years, has been a great one for music, and these are just the most popular songs I have been hearing on the radio, at parties and from my own library. These definitely are not my personal favorites, and there have certainly been lots of awesome projects dropping that I will address in later articles. But for now, enjoy this list. I’m sure you’ve heard them all before, and will hear them again.
10. "Something Just Like This" by The Chainsmokers ft. Coldplay
This is just a great feel good song. It is always great to jam to at parties and at the bar. I hope the Chainsmokers and Coldplay link up more in the future! Coldplay live was one of the best concerts of my life and I highly recommend seeing them.
9. "iSpy" by Kyle ft. Lil Yachty
This might take the cake for catchiest song of the year so far. I’m really happy that Kyle has blown up off this song, as I have been following him for a while and always enjoyed his work. Lil Yachty has also been putting in work in 2017. Watch out for these two young stars.
8. "Mask Off" by Future
Future has really been grinding. The guy is a machine. He puts out albums and mixtapes all the time, and I love it. This song is especially catchy. It gets the people going. Seriously, watching people bump to this and scream “Molly, Percocet,” when they clearly have done neither of those drugs in their life, is quite amusing.
7. "Humble" by Kendrick Lamar
I wish I could put the whole album on this list, because Kendrick really killed it. DNA, Love and Loyalty are the other three you have probably been hearing non-stop. The album start to finish is really a masterpiece. King Kendrick has set the bar high, let’s see if other rappers will rise to the challenge (looking at you, Drake).
6. "Wild Thoughts" by DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna and Bryson Tiller
Rihanna can seemingly do no wrong. She is the queen of music right now, move over Beyonce and Nicki Minaj. Not only that, but she also seems to be doing big things outside of music, like meeting up with the French President to talk about women’s rights and education. Also, Tiller is an upcoming star. If you haven’t listened to him yet, I suggest you do so.
5. "Closer" by The Chainsmokers
Man, these guys just seem to whip up hit after hit. I also heard that their live concerts are awesome, although I have yet to go to one. This particular song is especially cherished in the Seton Hall community, as we all collectively sing, “from your roommate back in Boland” instead of Boulder. This song is really fun and catchy, although at this point, probably overplayed. I mean all of these are probably overplayed. This one especially, though, in my opinion.
4. "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran
This song is my guilty pleasure. I can’t deny it. I sing it in the shower. I sing it in the car. I sing it when it comes on at the bar. Ed Sheeran just knows how to whip up those catchy hooks and verses. The beat is very catchy as well. Also, who saw Ed Sheeran make a little cameo on Game of Thrones?! The man is everywhere. I’m sure we can expect many more chart toppers from Ed in the future. The man is straight up talented.
3. "I’m the One" by DJ Khaled ft. Justin Beiber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne
Well, DJ Khaled did it, again. He assembled an all-star cast and dropped another anthem. Another one. His album, Grateful, was actually pretty fire, with lots of great features, as is to be expected from the music mogul himself, DJ Khaled. Anyway, this catchy tune has been all over the radio. I especially like Chance and Wayne’s verses, although not their best work, still very good. As Wayne said, I’m the best yet and yet my best is yet to come. Words to live by, ladies and gentlemen.
2. "XO TOUR Llif3" by Lil Uzi Vert
Lil Uzi Vert has blown up this year. I was honestly surprised that this song got as popular as it did. I remember listening to it the day it first came out and bumping to it, but did not think it would be as successful as it was, due to the dark lyrics. It certainly was different than any other song I had heard from Lil Uzi, but that is not a bad thing. The beat is a banger, and it always gets everyone singing along.
1. "Despacito (Remix)" by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee ft. Justin Beiber
This is the song of the summer, even though most people only know one word of the song. It’s pretty fun to watch people sing along and totally butcher the Spanish just to jump back in when Beiber sings Despacito. It’s also funny that most people don’t even know that this is a remix. But this is definitely a song that gets everybody dancing, a textbook radio hit.
Honorable Mention: Congratulations by "Post Malone" ft. Quavo, Bodak Yellow by Cardi B, "Unforgettable" by French Montana ft. Swae Lee, "Magnolia" by Playboi Carti and "Bank Account" by 21 Savage
So what do you think? Did I get it right? Wrong? Let me know! And let’s look forward to all the great music the rest of 2017 will give us!
