Back to the Basics

I want to take this space this week to brag on a chapter I have personally seen doing a lot of good.We Greeks sometimes let it slip from our minds the main reasons we are all here other than brotherhood and sisterhood. Our philanthropies and the people or organizations that we support and fund are what define us and set us apart from just a big group of students having a good ole time. Observing these brothers during their philanthropy week recently has brought me back down to earth and made me realize that helping those in need truly is one of the main reasons we are all here.

The brothers of Beta Upsilon Chi, in the midst if their second ever Island Party Week philanthropy event, are keeping the main focus on their actual philanthropy, TivaWater. It's an organization that collects donations to fund the making and distributing of water filters to high need countries like Uganda and Guatemala. The brothers have reminded me of how much I take for granted like the ability to have clean drinking water at any time, which is not the case for many people around the world.

The week has consisted of a "hunt a BYX" day where participating sororities tracked down brothers across campus and wrote their letters all over their bodies. By the end of the day, the brothers all had sharpie everywhere including their faces. Also, that day was a Jason's Deli percentage night. A certain percentage of the profit from that night went towards TivaWater.
The next day was the sand volleyball tournament to go along with the island theme. Then there was a day designated for decorating the BYX house. The idea was the have quality decorations over quantity so some sororities went all out. There were lawn decorations and sidewalk chalk writings and window paint, and their yard was even "forked."
The last "competition" day held the Island Party dance competition. Each participating sorority put together an island-themed dance that incorporated TivaWater in some way. The final day was the event everyone was most looking forward to: Island Party! During the party was the banner drop and the announcing of the Island Party Week winners. Other points throughout the week could be accumulated by posting on the event page on Facebook, extra house decorations, painting the rock and donating directly to TivaWater.

Delta Gamma senior Grace Davis had this to say about the week, "The fact that we can donate money to this (TivaWater) instead of having to buy food and treats to try and convince fraternities that we love the fraternity more than another sorority makes my heart so happy. A philanthropy week actually focused on the philanthropy... NICELY DONE!"

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
