You Know You Are Growing Up When

What you learn defines who you will become

You know you’re growing up when summer doesn’t mean “summer” anymore. When free time with your friends revolves around work schedules and summer classes. The school year becomes an all year task, instead of just 9 months. Your freshman dorm won’t suit your lifestyle, and you move into apartments with friends. We soon learn what real bills are, which are a little more expensive than the McDonalds tab you are used to paying for. You still don’t have your life figured out, and are convinced you never fully will, but enjoying every moment is far more important right now. Adventures become more exciting, and traveling becomes more frequent. Spontaneous trips can turn into your best memories. We get restless, our imaginations and curiosity continue to grow, and we are never fully satisfied. Calling your friends to hang out at 11 at night becomes a normal thing because it’s the only time you are all free. We start to realize how much money means in our society when mom and dad aren’t always around to throw us a few extra dollars. High school friends become distant, and you start to see who is really making an effort to be in your life. If you’re lucky, you learn to appreciate the little things, sunsets, a good meal, and good friends. Between rushing to multiple jobs, stressing over school year round, and just worrying about everyday issues you’ll make time for those who matter. Saying no isn’t always a bad thing. You learn not to take everything personally. People change, the person you knew in high school may be completely different now just a few years later. Life will constantly be changing, and people will be coming in and out of your life faster than you think they will. You learn to let go, which could be one of the hardest lessons. You realize there are bigger issues than what you wear out on Friday night. You wish you were still that little kid playing on the playground, without a care in the world. Hopefully, you find an opportunity to grow in every situation life hands you. Make good contacts, you never know who you may need a few years down the road. If you are smart you will do what makes you happy, and not base your decisions off of what everyone else is doing. Growing up is filled with lessons both good and bad, what you learn from them defines who you will become.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
