The newest “headline” being in the spotlight for concerts and stand up comedy events is a new pouch from the company “Yondr.” This smart pouch locks away a phone or any other electronic device during a concert, comedy show, or any other type of performance. It has recently become more popular because celebrities want to feel more engaged with their audience and don’t want to feel like they are fighting for attention.
This is occurring all throughout the US and it is bringing people back to a time when it wasn’t a social responsibility to post what they’re doing on social media. A high school in California plans to implement these Yondr Slips in classrooms starting this upcoming school year.
Students have tested it out in class periods and school retreats and although they receive a bit of “shock” as they feel their phone vibrating and can’t respond to it, they like being able to disconnect for a while.
It is hard to go back to a world when you could easily disconnect and people would not freak out, but I think Yondr founder, Graham Dugoni is doing his best to find a way to bring it back.
Some may not appreciate what he is trying to implement or work on but I think it is moving society in a direction most beneficial to our social skills and respect for others.
Society as a whole is all about improving and evolving in the best way for the country as a whole. Constantly you find groups wanting to disconnect more and have moments of being present with those around them.
Understandably, it is difficult, as more and more jobs rely on the use of technology and constantly being available to be contacted. However, 20 years ago it was okay to be done with work when you left the office, why can that not be more accepted today as well?
I believe Yondr will help relationships as you will be able to be 100% present when having your date night at the comedy show or concert rather than always wanting to check if others are there as well.
I can see this product especially helping students in being successful in the classroom and am anxious to see if productivity and test grades improve in the California schools after it has been implanted for a semester.
As a reminder, it is okay to not respond immediately to a text and if it seems to be urgent, there is still an opportunity to leave your event get back to business for a moment before enjoying a leisure evening.
